Essex Universal Trench County Championships 19th March 2023
The third and final 2023 fast trap county championship was the Universal Trench at Nuthampstead shooting ground. Once again the Essex county had a full cohort of competitors covering all classes from Veteran to Junior. After the first 50 targets it was all to play for with Chris Wright trailing Chris Banks by a single target but over the second half of the day the younger of the Chris’ started to pull away, eventually taking the Essex high gun on a 90. Chris Wright took the veteran trophy and second overall on an 84. Eddie Lockwood took the Junior title on a great 79 with his Mum, Lorna, taking the Ladies title home. Big thank you to Ed and Nicky at Nuthampstead for hosting us once again and giving us great facilities to shoot in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Essex Automatic Ball Trap County Championships 12th March 2023
The Essex ABT county championships were once again held at Nuthampstead shooting ground this year and the wind made for an interesting day of shooting with the slower ABT targets barely getting off the ground on some occasions. After the first round Chris Wright had one hand on the trophy but a strong fight back from Ian Lockwood and Chris Banks meant it was all to play for on the last round with Chris Wright eventually taking high gun on an 85 by a single point from his challengers, both finishing on 84. Steve Carter took the veteran title on an 81, Eddie Lockwood the Juniors on a 76 and Katie Durrant emerged ladies champion on a 74. As usual, thanks go to the Nutty team for putting on a great shoot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Essex Olympic Trap County Championships 26th Feb 2023
Freezing cold conditions and strong Northerly winds greeted the shooters on Saturday 26th Feb for the Essex County OT championships at Nuthampstead shooting ground. The cold, wind and ever-changing light made for a challenging day shooting. After four very cold rounds Chris Banks emerged as the Essex High Gun with Dave Izzard taking home the Veteran trophy and Eddie Lockwood shooting OT for the first time winning Juniors. Special thanks go to Ed and Nicky at Nuthampstead shooting ground for putting on such a well run event.

Minutes from the Essex CPSA AGM held at The George, Newland Street, Witham on Wednesday 25th January 2023 at 7.30pm
There was over 60 Essex members at the AGM which on previous years is a fantastic turn out – thank you to everyone who attended!
- Apologies for absence
Dave Orrin, Mac
- Minutes from 2022 AGM
All in agreement they are accurate and correct. Proposed by Jon Willis and seconded by Phil Moss. There were no matters arising from them.
- Chairman’s Report
Todd didn’t have a lot to say other than well done to everyone who won in 2022 and who shot for Essex across all disciplines.
- Treasurer’s Report
Luke reported that currently there is a few issues with the bank account – mainly being switching over to electronic and needing a load of signatures. We will look to swap the bank accounts to another bank once this is sorted. Money in both accounts is still looking healthy and we have a total just shy of £10,000 in total and are still waiting for some levy money to come in. The most money each year goes to badges but hopefully this will reduce slightly with the new way in which we will be ordering the badges.
- Committee Members Reports
Nadine read out Chris Orrin’s report which covered Sporting, Fitasc and Super Sporting and the winners from the County shoots. Nadine then covered the All Round and Sportrap champs that were held at Clacton Gun Club.
Glen covered Skeet and All Round. Essex actually put in an All Round team in 2022 for the National Intercounties. Dave Billington won high gun and the Vets and Juniors teams were both winners. Essex won the South-East Intercounties Skeet Championship in 2022. 2022 was the year that Glen set up the 4 Counties Challenge. This consists of Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Essex won the first challenge. Overall was a good year for Skeet and hopeful 2023 will be even better.
Steve covered DTL and Double Rise. Unfortunately the Helice champs ended up being cancelled but Essex shot well at Bisley for the DTL but not so well at Northampton.
Jon reported on Olympic Skeet. A championship went ahead in 2022 and we entered the Inter Counties. The CPSA can offer funding to help with regards to things like Olympic Skeet so this might be worth looking into. With regards to Juniors we are trying to look at some events that we can get Juniors and Colts into.
Chris Wright reported on UT and OT. Essex haven’t done so well in 2022 but have never missed a South-East Region Intercounty shoot as everyone is very competitive. Nuthampstead continues to be the best ground to hold the Championships as it is a premier ground.
- Iain Parker – CPSA
We were lucky enough to have Iain Parker from the CPSA join our AGM this year. Iain talked about changes that have happened or that are in the pipeline for the CPSA and the sport as a whole. The debate about steel and lead cartridges came up as well as the proposed name change from CPSA to CTSA. There was also a Q&A section – thank you Iain for attending, it more than made up for previous years where no one has attended so we appreciate it.
BREAK AND RAFFLE
- Election of Chairman
No one stepped forward or got nominated to be Chairman. Todd was happy to do it again and was voted in again as Chairman.
Proposed – Mark Burrows
Seconded – Nigel Gilder
- Election of the committee
The committee were all happy to remain as they are, however Luke would like to step-down part way through the year when the bank accounts have been changed over to a new bank. Phil Moss came onto the committee and Dave Orrin resigned from the committee. Chris Wright although not officially on the committee is going to step aside and pass things over to Chris Banks who, going forward will do the reports etc for UT and OT.
Treasurer – Luke Riddington
Secretary – Nadine Gilder
Vice Chairman – Jon Willis
Committee Members
Chris Orrin, Phil Moss, Glen Defreitas, Steve Carter
- Any other business
The committee explained to everyone present that when it comes to the AGM we would like to do it differently. We have so many trophies missing and don’t always get a good number of people at the AGM we are wanting to change it to a presentation evening AGM where all trophies and badges are given out to all disciplines and winners. This will hopefully be an evening where parents and partners can be invited, food and drinks on offer as well as the normal raffle. This will hopefully then keep all trophies in check and they will all remain in 1 place. The date to get these trophies back will be decided at the next committee meeting.
We also have new Essex Clay Shooting Team clothing. This can be purchased from Personalise in Witham. They have a website and a mini shop dedicated to the Essex CPSA.
Meeting closed at 9.44pm

South East Region Intercounties - Olympic Trap - Nuthampstead 21.08.2022
Last year Essex were winners but not repeated this year.
Essex came 4th o/a. Essex HG was Tyler Minter on 86/100 (9th) and Emma Ralph 3rd in the Ladies on 73/100
County scores as follows - (1st) Greater London 419/500,( 2nd) Berks - 415/500, (3rd) Herts - 396/500, (4th) Essex - 389/500, (5th) Oxon - 382/500, (6th) Surrey - 365/500.
Great weather , lightening targets; doesn't get better than that but we didn't perform as expected ... that's sport !!

Essex CPSA Committee Meeting 8.8.2022
- Meeting opened at 8pm
- FITASC team has been sorted for the Southeast Intercounties
- Try and get a Sporting team together for Nationals at Doveridge
- Glen reported that Essex won the Southeast Intercounties this year and that selection shoots are going ahead as normal
- Steve reported that a team was being put together for Bisley for the Intercounties and that the Helice champs didn’t go ahead due to illness
- John reported the Olympic Skeet Southeast Intercounties was also incorporating the Essex Champs on 26th September
- Juniors and Colts – what can we do to get more of them into the sport? We could start going to country shows and having a small set up, young farmers, speak to the Fennes about a young shots day – last planned day couldn’t go ahead due to covid. We could ask top shots to help and do a young shots day also.
- Badges – the committee have decided that badges will only now be purchased after the events have taken place. Too much money is being wasted on having dated badges made when a lot of disciplines don’t have Colts or Juniors enter meaning they have to be thrown away.
- AGM – the committee have decided to try and do a different kind of AGM ongoing. We want to start collecting all trophies up and then present them every year at the AGM to all the winners along with their badges and make a night of it with food, drink, raffles and other things to make it an enjoyable night for all.
- Look into new venues for the presentation evening and package deals.
- Committee agreed to sponsor a stand at Bob Smith’s charity clay shoot as well as put in an amount to go towards the charity – Todd to sort signage for the cage.
- Next meeting 7th November
- Meeting close 10pm

Essex All Round Championship - Clacton Gun Club - Saturday 30th July
The Essex All Round Championship 2022 took place on 30th July. Despite clashing with the National Game Fair and the British All Round Championship, it still had an excellent attendance of 40 entries.
Laurie Greenleaf posted an excellent score of 92 on the very first squad out. Dave Billington on the very last squad of the day posted a score of 93 to take the championship.
Rob Humphries scored 90 to take the Veteran Title, and there were no Juniors on the day. The colts (both of them) decided to draw on 74 in the competition which led to a shoot off using single barrel DTL as the layout. E Lockwood started with nerves missing the firs 3 target, whilst G Billington hit the first 3 making it look very one sided. As the round progressed Eddie rallied but it became clear that both were feeling the tension, and at the "unload and check scores" it was declared another draw on 17 each. It went to sudden death on peg 3 where Eddie hit the 1st target, and George missed his, giving Eddie the Colt title.
Overall - D Billington - 93
Vet - R Humphries - 90
Lady - K Durrant - 81
Colt - E Lockwood - 74

Minutes of the Essex CPSA AGM held on Wednesday 16th March 2022 at the White Hart in Witham
Committee members present
Nadine Gilder – Secretary
Dave Bignell – Vice Chairman
Luke Riddington – Treasurer
John Willis
- Apologies for absence
Nigel Gilder, Laurie Greenleaf, Todd Bridge, Ian Schwier, Glen Defreitas, Merv Howe, Mac, Stuart Clarke
- Minutes from 2020
These were the last minutes due to Covid and they were all signed off as accurate by John Willis and Dave Bignell and there were no matters arising from them
- Chairman’s report
Ian was not present but wanted to step down from the role
- Treasurer’s report
Luke confirmed there was virtually no income last year due to Covid but there is still just under £10,000 in the account so compared to most counties we are looking very healthy.
Covid has meant SE Region amount went from £1500 2019 to £250 2021.
We need new ideas of how we can spend our money rather than it just sitting there year on year.
The current account will be closed as an old account and all monies will go into a new account that has online banking.
- Committee Members Report
Dave Bignell wanted to thank Chris Wright for doing what he does and for his work when it comes to OT, UT and ABT.
All badges have been ordered and will be ready any time now.
John Willis who deals with Juniors and Colts wasn’t able to organise any taster days due to Covid restrictions but hopes to plan something for 2022. Southend Gun Club are keen to do something. Once organised dates will go on Facebook.
The biggest yearly expense is badges but in 2022 hopefully a lot of missing trophies will be replaced.
- Election of Chairman
Nadine Gilder has previously spoken with Todd and he was happy to be the new Essex Chairman. Nadine Gilder proposed and Dave Bignell seconded.
- Election of the Committee
All other committee member were voted in. Nadine, Luke, Glen and John to remain as they are with John also taking on Vice Chairman with Dave stepping down. Chris and Dave Orrin to come on as committee members and to take on Sporting, FITASC, Compak, Super Sporting, Sportrap. Steve Carter had already been accepted onto the committee before the AGM and is taking over DTL, Single Barrel, Double Rise and Helice. Chris Wright although not on the committee will continue to sort out the disciplines he deals with.
- AOB
The SE Region levy is going up to £3, so should the Essex levy go up to £3 from £2 in 2022 – majority ruled no so this remains at £2 for the 2022 season.
Pull Magazine – Nadine bought this up but unfortunately no one in the room wanted to take it on.
Meeting closed at 21.13pm
Bank account closing balances as of 31st December 2021
Community Account - £4686.00
Account - £5272.89

The Essex Universal Trench Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on Sunday 20th March 2022.
This was held in conjunction with the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire UT Championships.
Taking place in mid March, the cold wind once again got to the competitors as well as the targets. The saving grace being the light conditions which were mainly sunny with some white cloud. This allowed the targets stand out against the impressive Nuthampstead banked background, resulting in some excellent scores.
David Henshaw won the Championship with a score of 86, followed close behind by John Haas who took the Veterans Trophy with 85.
Those keeping an eye on the Essex Trap results will be aware that Dave & John have now taken both of these trophies at all of this year's Essex Trap Championships. But not only that, in some cases, for the second year running.
Thanks are due again to Nicky & Ed Barker of Nuthampstead Shooting Ground, for staging another perfectly run Championship on their superb Trap layouts.
Picture shows the winners left to right: John Haas Vet Champion, David Henshaw Champion and Essex Trap organizer Chris Wright.
The Essex Automatic Ball Trap Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on Sunday 6th March 2022.
This was held in conjunction with the Hertfordshire ABT Championship.
There was a very cold wind crossing the ranges, that the covered layouts gave no protection from. As well as affecting the targets, some competitors were buffeted by these cold blasts and were clearly chilled to the bone.
John Haas emerged the Champion with a score of 87, whilst David Henshaw took the Veteran's Trophy with 79. Katie Durrant won the Ladies Trophy with 59.
Thanks are once again due to Nicky & Ed Barker for another faultlessly run competition on their excellent Trap layouts.
Picture shows the winners left to right: John Haas, Katie Durrant and David Henshaw, together with Essex Trap organizer Chris Wright.
The Essex Olympic Trap Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on Sunday 27th February 2022.
This was held in conjunction with the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire Olympic Trap Championships and had a good turnout.
Conditions were cold & breezy but with blue skies and unbroken sunshine. This not only made for a pleasant day, but also gave good visibility to the fast Olympic Trap targets.
The overall Essex Champion for the second year running, with a score of 84 was John Haas. The Veteran Trophy was taken by David Henshaw on 79, also for the second year running.
Many thanks to Ed & Nicky Barker of Nuthampstead Shooting Ground, for once again staging a faultless competition on their superb Trap layouts.
Pictures show the winners collecting their trophies from Essex Trap organizer Chris Wright.

New Year 2021 - Updated 14.11.2020
With there being a lot of uncertainty about what we will and won't be able to do next year, there are a few things the committee has already agreed on and put into place for the 2021 season.
County Championships (Sporting, FITASC, Compak, Sportrap)
As of 2021 (whether Covid is still around or not) if there are any ties for the title trophies the winner will be decided by countback instead of giving the title to the person that was there until the end or a shoot off. This has been decided certainly during current times as shooters are supposed to shoot and then leave the ground to clamp down on social distancing but we think this is also fair moving forward year on year.
AGM 2021
We are booking the White Hart in Witham as usual for the 2021 AGM for sometime in January just in case this can go ahead, however if Covid still doesn't allow this we will be having a committee AGM via Zoom. If any Essex shooters want to raise any concerns or have any topics you need us to discuss or iron out please get in contact with Ian or Nadine as soon as possible. We will update you all on this nearer to the time.
DTL
The committee are in need of someone from the DTL disipline to come onto the committee and give their input/feedback and to look after the DTL shooters. If this is of interest to you please get in contact.
Selection Shoots 2021 (Sporting & FITASC)
In 2021 Essex will not be holding any selection shoots to get into the Sporting of Fitasc teams. Instead we will go through the rankings and pick the team this way. We tried this year to hold selection shoots. We managed 2 before Covid put a stop to the rest.
Trophies (Sporting, FITASC, Compak, Sportrap)
Unfortunately there are a lot of missing trophies currently within the above disiplines. We have made the decision to replace all these missing trophies and because of this, as of 2021 all main trophies will be held by the committee and will not be able to return home with the winners unfortunately. To make up for this, we are instead going to be purchashing little tophies that are specially engraved with the winners name and what they won. The main trophy will of course be engraved also and will be put on display at a ground for all to see. The small trophies will then be handed out at the AGM the following year (won in 2020, gets given to you at the 2021 AGM) and the winners have something they can keep. This has been a yearly topic and we think that this is the best way to protect the trophies and their history.
We ask that all current trophy holders return the trophies they have at the 2021 AGM or beforehand to either Ian, Nadine or Dave Bignell. Once they have been collected (we currently know who has what) we will then get the missing ones replaced and re-engraved.
If anyone has any queries please get in contact with Ian Schwier (ianschwier@me.com) or Nadine Gilder (nadine.gilder@sky.com).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pull Magazine - 14.11.2020
There have been some concern/complaints about how little goes into the Pull magazine every month. Unofrtunately it is impossible to put anything into the magazine unless shooters within the county update Ian/Nadine on what does go on, who wins what etc. Please, if you have anything to say however big or small even if it is about yourself, do get in contact so these things can be put into the magazine and onto the website.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Statement from Clacton Gun Club - 17.05.2020
Clacton Gun Club Update 16th May 2020
Clacton Gun Club still remains closed and will not be offering “Pay and Play” Clay Shooting
It is great news the CPSA have announced that Clay Shooting has been approved to re-start by the Government in a “play and pay” format with registered competitions to follow later.
There are a number of grounds in the area who are fully capable of offering and controlling pay and play shooting under the present terms, however Clacton Gun Club has never offered this as its primary function so will remained closed.
Once registered competitions are re-introduced, Clacton Gun Club will review the rules and guidance needed to resume, and once happy that all aspects can be covered and met, only then re-open.
We thank our members for their patience and hope we will soon be able to invite you back to the ground.

Essex UT Team Runners up in SE Regional Tournament
The South East Region Intercounties Universal Trench Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on 29th September 2019. The conditions were mixed with the odd shower and changing light. Our Essex Team consisted of Chris Wright, Dave Izzard, Dave Henshaw, Chris Banks, John Haas and Veteran Richard Banks. Despite an excellent effort including 25 straights by both Chris Wright and Dave Izzard, Essex were runners up to Greater London by only 12 targets. Greater London scored 448 to Essex's 436 in a very close run competition which should only spur Essex on in the future. The other county teams competing scored as follows: Hertfordshire 425/500, Sussex 415/500, Oxfordshire 409/500 and Surrey 377/500. At the time of writing, the same Essex team members are preparing for the National Intercounties ABT Championships for which we wish them Good Shooting!
Once again thanks go to the Barker family of Nuthampstead Shooting Ground for hosting another faultless event.
Essex Team Runners up in SE Skeet Tournament
The South East Inter Counties Skeet Tournament was held on a slightly damp day on the 22nd September at Bisley.
Sadly we had a bad start as Alex Garcia's gun broke the day before so he had to use an ill fitting gun. Our senior team totalled 482 for second place behind Oxford on 488. Scores Glen Defreitas 99, Dave Hendon 97, Nigel Cullinane 97, Alex Garcia 95, and David Billington 94. Glen Defreitas won A class and came 2nd overall after a 4 way shoot off. Our junior, Harry Willis, won juniors with 92. Our lady Katie Durrant was runner up on 90 after a shoot off. Well done to all squad members for their efforts. We now look forward to the National Inter County championship at Dartford gun club.

Dave Billington Wins the Essex Skeet Doubles Championship
September the 7th was the day of the Essex Skeet Doubles Championship at Clacton Gun Club. Dave Billington's 93 was good enough to win him the title, with Katies Durrant being the Ladies champion, George Billington taking the colts title and Gary Bridger the vets. See skeet-doubles for photos of the winners.

Essex Olympic Trap Championship

See olympic-trap--otr for the full report and photos.
South East DTL Championship
The 8th September was a beautiful day which added to the participants' enjoyment of the South East DTLK Championship held at the Mayland and District G.C. Toby Bean scored his first ever 100/300 to take the overall Championship.
See dtl-results for a report and photos.
Essex Sportrap Championship
The 10th August was a blustery day with occasional heavy rainshowers making the refereeing very difficult for the Essex Sportrap Championship held at Clacton Gun Club. Kevin Norfolk won the overall championship with an amazing score of 92. Dave Bignell's 85 won him the veteran title. There was a tie for the Lady's championship title with Nadine Gilder and Katie Durrant both scoring 77. Unfortunately, Nadine was unable to return for a shoot-off so Katie was pronounced the champion.
Kevin Norfolk (Champion) and Katie Durrant (Lady Champion) Dave Bignell (Veteran Champion)
Sportrap Challenge
Thanks to Clacton gun club for hosting the Essex Sportrap challenge, at the end of the event we had a tie between Trevor Hearn and Peter Mayhew both with a score of 91. Trevor had left the ground and was contacted, but unable to return for a much anticipated shoot off, Peter (pictured below left receiving the trophy from Dave Bignell) was crowned champion for 2019 well done to him.
Essex Helice Championship (19th May)
The beautifully scenic hillside that is Invicta shooting ground in Tonbridge, Kent, was the venue for the Essex Helice Championship and Essex Helice shooting Team selection shoot. While the day started a little overcast, the wind was kind and weather relatively warm. Despite the good shooting weather those pesky ZZ birds still proved very difficult for some of us. Not so for young Mason Terry (14 yrs old, pictured below) who when the dust had settled, took the overall champion title and is now the youngest Essex Helice champion of the last decade. Alongside him Jessica Byard (12 yrs old) continues her recent good form and secured the Essex Ladies champion title while stalwart Graham Woodman took the veteran title. The rest of us had to settle for a great day out and a place in the Essex team. A massive thank you goes to Chris Potter and the entire team at Invicta for hosting the event and organising everything for us and of course the ladies in the kitchen that as always kept us fed and watered throughout the day. If anyone hasn’t tried ZZ / Helice, you really should give it a try, you never know, you may just find a hidden talent for it and go on to represent GB internationally as I have had the pleasure to do. To all the other non essex, Helice shooters that attended today’s shoot, well done all, see you soon we hope.

Essex Skeet Championship
Saturday, 22nd June finally showed what June weather should be: very warm with a slight breeze - ideal conditions to hold the 2019 Essex Skeet Championship. The new champion is Dave Hendon who shot 97 ex 100. Ladies champion was Katie Durrant with a 96, the same score as Colts champion Harry Willis and Steve Todd memorial shield winner Mark Burrows. Gary Bridger won the Veterans title on 93. Congratulations to you all and many thanks to everyone who turned up for their participation. Thanks too, to Andy Riva and his team at Clacton Gun Club for making everyone so welcome.

Essex AllRound Championship
Saturday, 8th June was, without a doubt, a miserable day with heavy rain and strong gusting winds – not ideal conditions for the 2019 Essex AllRound Championship held at Clacton Gun Club. A good turnout still made the effort and well done to all of you. K. Williamson took the Overall title and the Vets Championship with a score of 85. Katie Durrant (pictured below) won the Ladies Championship with 69, H Willis’s 74 won the Juniors and M Coham took the Colt’s title with 52. Thanks to Clacton G.C. for hosting the event.

South East Region’s Intercounties Championship
Essex achieved a creditable fourth place in the South East Region Inter-counties Championship, held at Southdown Gun Club over the weekend of the 16th/17th March.
