West Midlands Area and Inter County ABT competition

at Rugby & District Trap Club on 8th April 2018

Many thanks to all the team at Rugby & DTC for organising a great days shooting. The weather was intermittent rain all day but not too windy and as we were under cover whilst shooting the rain didn't bother us. It was great to see loads of people attending and the car park was certainly full to capacity. It was alo great that every West Midland County entered a team. Scoring was 5 scores from 6 shooters to count and the County team scores are listed below. There are no Ladies, Veterans or Junior categories at the ABT Inter County event but it was also an Area ABT event so individuals could enter the Area competition.

NATIONAL I/C ABT AT BEVERLEY CTC 9th OCTOBER 2016

On Arrival at the ground the H&W team members were greeted by a fresh but cloudy day with the sun occasionally revealing itself much to the delight of all the shooters. H&W being on the first wave of squads out at 9am faced some challenging targets to say the least with the clays exiting the trench in dark shadows. Never the less all team members performed extremely well with a lot of experience being learnt by everyone!!!

Individual results

Rod Davies  86

Jo-Ann Allen 85

Richard Allen 84

Andy Foxall 78

H&W held their 2015 ABT County Championships at Park Farm Shooting Ground on Sunday 30th August.  8 squads were put through 2 layouts and thanks must go to Lisa, Luke and their team for running the day without a hitch, even having to contend with a shoot off to find our club champion.

WEST MIDLANDS AREA & IC ABT CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015

The I/C and Area ABT Championships were shot at Rugby & DTC again this year with some half decent weather for a change.  There were some excellent scores on the day, including our own Rod Davies, who shot a very creditable 92 which was good enough to win him the area silver medal.  We must also mention Jackie Cotton as she won the Ladies Silver medal.  Unfortunately, H&W just missed out on a team medal, finishing fourth. Team scores were Rod Davies 92, Andy Foxall 87, Nick Stokes and Kevin Cotton 84, Jackie Cotton and Mike Perry 68.  I would also like to congratulate Rod Davies on his inclusion into the England ABT team to shoot the home international in Ireland in September, well done Rod.  (report Nick Stokes)

HEREFORD & WORCESTER ABT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014

We had a glorious day on 3rd August for the County ABT Championships at Park Farm SG with dry warm sunny weather and very good company.  There were 41 shooters there on the day (25 from H&W) making up 8 squads.  This was the second registered shoot at Park Farm and, as you would expect, it went like clockwork.  Our appreciation and thanks go to Phil, Di and all the team for a great day, not forgetting Sarah.  Also there shooting and representing the CPSA was Terry Bobbett and our thanks to him for presenting the trophy to the County Champion Richard Allen.  After the first round there were only 4 H&W shooters with the highest score of 23ex25 but after the second round two shooters were well ahead of any others, Richard Allen and Lee Betts with 47ex50.  After the third round Lee was ahead by one target but after the fourth round it was Richard that won through finishing on 95ex100.  There was a shoot off for the runner up spot between Lee Betts and Paul Cerri as they had both finished on 93ex100, with Lee taking runner up spot.  The Ladies competition was also close between Lisa Sanders and Jo-Ann Allen.  After the third round they were both on 62, which meant the last round was crucial.  Jo-Ann shot an 18 which meant if Lisa could shoot a 19+ it was her title.  But it wasn't to be as she shot 16 which gave Jo-Ann the Ladies title.  The Veterans title was very closely fought with the eventual winner Paul Colley on 86ex100 taking the title.  Just behind on 85 was Ron Braithwaite with Richard Atkins, after a break of 30+ years shooting an 80.  The Juniors and Colts was also very close with Jack Ruane taking the colts title on 68 and Andrew Stokes taking the Juniors also with 68.  High gun and A class winner, from Staffordshire was Adam Gutteridge with 96ex100.  B class winner was Phil Sanders with 92 and runner up was Shropshire's top Veteran Graham Evans with 90.   C class was won by Warwickshire's J J Reilly with 86 and D class was won by Lisa Sanders with 78.

1st - 95 - Richard Allen - COUNTY CHAMPION

2nd - 93 - Lee Betts - RUNNER UP

2nd - 93 - Paul Cerri

4th - 92 - Phil Sanders

5th - 89 - Stuart Palmer

6th - 87 - Matt Haines

It was a shame that a few more Counties did not enter teams but the standard was very high overall with Nick Dean from Staffordshire winning on 97ex100.

WM INTER COUNTIES & AREA ABT CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012

Rugby & District Trap Club delivered some very exciting clays at the IC & Area ABT Championships on Sunday 21st October.  I really enjoyed some high birds but others didn’t share my love!  Well done John and your team for an excellent day and thanks for letting everyone see more daylight under the clays at Rugby.  Our Team varied in performance but I hope they all enjoyed our day's shooting.  As a County we finished 4th only 3 clays away from Staffordshire and a 3rd position so it was close!  It was really good to see all 7 Counties enter teams with Gloucestershire entering 2 teams!  The days of Glos not entering many trap events are clearly now over.  Individual results are as follows:  High Gun and Area Champion on the day from H&W with 91/100 is Richard Allen, Mark Hampton shot 89 and won the Area Silver Medal, Rod Davies 85, Roy Hampton 63, Nick Stokes 61, Kevin Cotton 56.  Jo-Ann Allen was the Ladies Area Gold Medal winner with an excellent score of 82 but she didn't want to enter the team which was a pity as she had an excellent days shooting. (We will put her in next time but don't tell her anyone).  Jackie Cotton shot a 52 winning the Ladies Area Bronze medal and only 4 clays behind her husband.  County Team Results are as follows:  Warwickshire 405, Cheshire 400,  Staffordshire 392, H&W 389, Gloucestershire 379, Shropshire 367 and Derbyshire 366.  Report Rod Davies

ABT HOME INTERNATIONAL 2011

REPORT FROM RICHARD ALLEN

Southern Counties Shooting Ground saw outstanding performances from Hereford & Worcester shooters Jo-Ann Allen and Bradley Strain at the 37th ABT Home International held on 9th & 10th September.  Whilst the ground, facilities and targets were first rate, shooters had to battle against extremely challenging conditions including poor light, mist, drizzle and very high winds.  Despite the weather Jo-Ann shot consistently well throughout to finish on 176, taking not only the England Ladies’ High Gun but also the overall Ladies’ High Gun title – pipping Kirsty Barr of Northern Ireland by 1 target.  Bradley’s poise and focus led to a superb 184, giving him both the England Junior High Gun and the overall Junior High Gun titles.  I am sure all Hereford & Worcester shooters will combine in congratulating Jo-Ann and Bradley on their achievements – they have done their country (and their county!) proud.

Report from Nick Stokes - Joint Trap Manager

We were back at Rugby & DTC for the 2011 H&W ABT County Championships on Sunday 24th April.  We were blessed with great weather and an excellent turnout with 16 H&W shooters making the trip on Easter Sunday.  The lead changed on numerous occasions in a very close fought competition with Mark Hampton shooting a 25 straight on the last layout to win by 1 clay, finishing on 91 to take the County title.  Jo-Ann Allen was just piped at the post, finishing with a very creditable 90, taking the runners up place and the Ladies title.  Kevin Cotton was coming up on the rails but couldn't quite make it finishing 3rd with 89.  Bradley Strain took the Juniors title with 88, and Roy Hampton and John Ward share the Vets title with 79.  Thanks to John and Keith at Rugby for yet another well run event.

WEST MIDLANDS AREA AND INTER COUNTIES ABT CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010
The area and Inter Counties ABT championships were held on Sunday 15th August at Rugby & DTC. H&W put in a team of six which included Bradley Strain, Nick Stokes, Mark Lilly, Rod Davies, Richard Allen and Kevin Cotton. There was a testing left to right breeze ( sorry gale ) making for some testing targets but due to some consistent scores H&W managed to take the Bronze Medal. On top of that Bradley took the Area Junior Gold Medal and we had two ladies shooting on the day with Jo Allen taking the Area Gold Medal and Jackie Cotton the silver. Well done to all our shooters and a special mention for Rod Davies who (after twenty something years of shooting for the county) has won his first ever Inter County medal, keep it up mate and I might pick you again. Thanks to John Nightingale and his team for the usual well run event.
