Reg Carruthers retires as Chairman from Penrith Gun Club, Bowscar, November 2017

After being a member of Penrith Gun Club, Bowscar for 25 years and Chairman of the Club for over 20 years, Reg Carruthers has decided to step down as Chairman to allow him more time with his family.  Reg was voted Chairman in 1997, after recovering from a serious illness.  Over the years Reg has led from the front with integrity and a real love of the club and has made some wonderful friends over the years.  Sadly he has lost some as well and they are fondly remembered by himself and members.

The club progressed under his leadership after a knock back when Foot and Mouth hit the country in 2001 and the Club was forced to close for a period of time.  Alterations were made to the Club premises over the years, whereby portacabins replaced the ‘hen shed’ where entries were taken.  Over the years the Club has gone from strength to strength with Reg at the helm with the excellent support of a small team of dedicated workers who are always to be relied on for their help.

From taking on the role as Chairman, the Club has built up from a few squads to an average of 7 squads per shoot.  We now have 3 traps with voice recognition, which has increased shooters taking part.  We have had the honour of holding the North of England 100 DTL Selection shoots at Penrith for the last few years and hold three disciplines for the County Championships and currently, with a steady increase, have over 80 members.

Reg and the club as a whole has a reputation for being a friendly club and our members travel long distances to join us at the club from Scotland, Lancs, Yorks, Durham and elsewhere.  We are always delighted to see our members and they are assured of a good days shooting with a good company and excellent catering facilities from Reg’s lovely wife Elizabeth, Donna and Megan.

Reg will be sadly missed as Chairman, but last year was voted as President of the Club, after the founder Hubert Hetherington stepped down after ill health.  Hubert sadly passed away this year.  So Reg will still have a presence at the Club as President, so we are not losing him.  Thank you Reg for your hard work and support and the club will always be grateful to you.
