EAST MIDLAND SINGLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIP
Report by Lee Clements
East Midlands Single Barrel Championship
The first regional championship of the new season was held at Nottingham and District Gun Club on the 13th of March.
The weather on the day was a little unusual for Notts, with a thick fog shrouding the ground making the trap houses barely visible!.
This however didn't deter Lincolnshire's talented young gun Joshua Brazier shooting on squad 1 from posting a magnificent 97/100, a score that would reign supreme until Nottinghamshire’s own Lee Wilcoxson shooting on squad 5 chalked up an amazing 99 first barrel kills using his trusted Hull Pro One cartridges, and looked a near certain bet to take the title.
As the day progressed and the fog started to lift, Lee himself noted that if his score was going to be beaten it would probably be done by one of the Team Toledo shooters lined up on squad 8 … he was right!, with Lincolnshire’s Nick Rose matching Lee’s score and Nottinghamshire’s Paul Meakin doing what us mere mortals can only dream about, shooting a perfect 100/100 and thus earning him the title.
With Lee and Nick both tied on 99 a shoot off was required to decide second and third place. In the end Nick just edged out Lee by one clay giving him the silver medal and Lee had to settle for bronze (although Lee did shoot 100 registered DTL while he was waiting for the shoot off and scored an incredible 100/299 so he can’t be too disappointed with his days efforts!).
The junior competition was won by Joshua Brazier (97/100) with Nottingham's Freddy Brown coming second (94/100), and the lovely IzzyThurnell taking bronze. The ladies title was won by Hazel Whiten (88/100) just edging Tracey Bridge into second (86/100) and Sarah Odam into third (80/100).
Notts legend Ken Rimington shot superbly as usual (97/100) but could only manage veterans silver this time as Lincolnshire's Nigel Lovatt pipped him by 1 clay (98/100) and earned himself the veterans title. The veterans bronze medal was won by Steve Bridge (88/100).
Well done to all the winners and thank you to Carl and the team for a well run shoot.
