Norfolf edge out Suffolk in Sporting Thriller.

NORFOLK EDGE OUT SUFFOLK IN SPORTING THRILLER By Jan Stennett

FOUR OF THE WINNING NORFOLK SENIOR TEAM - WELL IT WAS FAIRLY LATE !!

The Indian summer that has been September still held up for the Intercounties Sporting held this year at Mid Norfolk Shooting Ground on 27th September.  All 8 counties in the East Midlands region fielded senior and junior teams and 7 counties fielded ladies and veteran teams.

Some of the biggest names in the sporting world appeared in their respective county teams meaning that all counties were not just there to enjoy the sunshine.  The final results between the top two senior teams could hardly have been closer with the Norfolk team, M Goddard, J Balls, R Bunning, M Briggs, C Hinkins, J Newman, K Hagan and P Freeman, on 535 just edging Suffolk into the runner up place by just 2 clays.

Both teams had the top scorers of the day.  Norfolk’s Richard Bunning returned a 95 but so also did Suffolk’s P Jarvis.

The Suffolk team were P Simpson, C Baker, P Jarvis, M Keymer, N Bedingfield, K. Theobald, R. Hunter and E. Chapman.

The Norfolk/Suffolk battle continued in the junior and ladies category.  Norfolk’s juniors, C Wharton, B Dagless, A Harley and K Woodhall-Cross took the junior category with a very convincing 169, 14 points over their nearest rivals Suffolk and the Norfolk ladies team of S Hallwood, H Pointer, T Rose and A Crown also held off the Suffolk challenge by 7 points.

It was left to the veterans to drive a wedge between these two counties and the Cambridgeshire veterans did just that.  The Cambridge vets, B Simpson, B Dunbavin, P Garrod and R Gifford took 1st place on 178 with Norfolk and Suffolk tied for second place on 170.

Kyle Woodhall-Cross was junior high gun with a magnificent score of 87.  Congratulations to all, it was a very good fight.  Our thanks to Mike Reynolds and his team at Mid Norfolk for putting on a very enjoyable round of sporting but also for coping with the logistical nightmare that is a team event.
