East Midlands ABT
MEAKIN TAMES BREEZY NOTTINGHAM
Trap shooters from 15 Counties converged on a bright and breezy Nottingham to compete in the Regional ABT Championships; there were 62 entrants 44 of which were from the region with Lincs and Nott’s shooters as you would expect dominating the entry and of course the medal tally at the end of the day.
Paul Meakin from Nott’s stood head and shoulders above and experienced field of shooters to lift the senior title with a superb score of 97 some four targets clear of his nearest rival Nigel Watson from neighbouring Lincolnshire who had to settle for the silver medal. Dick Fletton made the trip up the M1 from Leicestershire and was the only shooter on the day to break the Lincs/Nott’s stranglehold on this event by taking the bronze medal with a score of 92, which was no mean score considering the stiff breeze and was a further endorsement of Paul’s achievement with his title winning score.
Leading Nott’s Junior Curtis Woolley took yet another Regional Gold medal with a score of 84 but Jack Wilkinson of Lincolnshire pushed him all the way and just failing by two clays, with a below par 16 on his third round being his downfall. Nott’s latest talent Freddy Brown collected his second East Midlands medal in three weeks by completing the placings and taking the Bronze medal.
Nott’s lady Rachel Parish took the Ladies title with a solid score of 85 four targets clear of Lincolnshire girls Tracey Bridge and Alison Dupree who picked up the silver and bronze medals respectively.
The Vets title race was a very close thing with six regional shooters finishing within two clays of each other, Bob Richardson from Lincolnshire just doing enough with a score of 89 to take the gold medal. It was then left with a three way tie for second, Nott’s webmaster Ken Rimington, John Winn from Lincs just home from his success in the World DTL in South Africa where he won the runners up medal and Ian Heathcote from Leicestershire. Sadly Ian had left the ground and was well down the motorway when Ken and John fought it out for the minor placings with the shoot off throwing Ken up as the silver medallist and John having to settle for bronze.
Once again thanks to the super efficient team at Nottingham & District who provided a flawless days shooting.
