Regional Handicap by Distance Championships
It’s a Riot – Notts Loot all the Prizes
For those that have never shot this discipline, it is a derivative of DTL and competitors are handicapped by their DTL Classification. You have to shoot with a squad that are the same class as yourself as the higher classed shooters have to stand further from the trap house than the lower classed shooters. This makes it more difficult for the better shooters and ensures that everyone has a chance of winning trophies. The prize money all goes into one pot rather than being divided by classes, so cash prizes are achievable for all who enter the competition too. It's an event that some describe as the fairest of all, others (generally the AAs who have to shoot from 23yards, 7 yards further than a regular DTL Competition) are not so complimentary! The adjustment in difficulty really is a test, even for those who normally walk away with a title.
A cloudy but warm day welcomed the East Midlands contingent to Nottingham & District Gun Club on Sunday 14th August for the Regional Handicap by Distance Championship.
Of the 24 competitors, 18 were from the region and it was the shooters from the home county of Nottinghamshire that fared the best. Dave Albans posted an early score to watch of 92/272, within that he managed a 25/75 on his first layout, only one of two perfect rounds on the day. His C Class squad, shooting from 17 yards contained three of the four eventual title winners with Freddy Brown scoring 89/259 taking the junior title unopposed and Davina Rowe taking the ladies title with 90/255, over 30 points more than the next placed lady. Dave himself was the Veteran champion as Russ Hufton was soon to show how it was done, even from 23 yards! Shooting with his AA class squad which included last year’s winner Lee Clements, Russ also managed a perfect 25/75 on his 3rd layout, finishing with an impressive 96/283 and securing the title.
Can anyone break the Nott’s stranglehold on this competition? Keep an eye out for next year’s fixtures and have a go at some DTL with a difference.
Thanks as always to Carl and the NDGC team for a well-run competition.
Many thanks also to John Martin (Photo) and Julia Fell our Northern correspondant.
