Regional ABT Championships 2017
MORRIS DANCES TO VICTORY
A bright and breezy day for the 56 shooters in attendance to deal with, but the added bonus of shooting right through and no reffing, all that taken care of by the CPSA qualified refs provided by Carl Smith and his team at Nottingham & District GC.
Despite the breezy conditions the quality of shooting was excellent with about 25% of the field scoring plus 90 scores. In the final reckoning it was Richard Morris from Cambridgeshire who triumphed with a superb 96/100, just edging out local man Russ Hufton who never quite recovered from a below par from him first round score of 22, Russ having to settle for Silver.
Third overall was a three way tie between junior James Cheung from Nott’s, Norman “Moose” Eaton from Lincolnshire, and Steve Smith from Lincolnshire who were all locked together on 93. James scored 24 but was eliminated from the shoot-off as Steve and Norm made no mistakes completing perfect rounds, a further round again saw Steve record a 25 to Norm’s 24, leaving Steve as the bronze medal winner.
In vets it was Ken Rimington from Nott’s who added to his mountain of regional medals by claiming gold with a score 92, Bob Tucker from Leicestershire was second on 91, and there was a bit of a traffic jam of shooters in third with no less than 5 shooters locked on 88. Once again a shoot-off resolved the issue, but the field was down to three as Brian Wilkinson and Graham Elkington had already left the ground. In the resulting shoot off Dave Shepherd scored 20, Gary McCann 22 and it was left to Dick Cooper of Lincolnshire to mop up the final medal with a score of 24.
In Ladies it was another gold medal for Hazel Whiten from Cambridgeshire with a superb score of 86, she was well clear of Kirstin Vogel (Northants) and Elena Taylor (Lincs) who were tied on 81, but as Elena had left the ground Kirstin was awarded silver, with Elena having to settle for the bronze.
In juniors it was more straightforward with James Cheung winning comfortably on a score of 93, Kirstin Vogel claimed her second medal of the day in second place, with the third place medal not contested.
Thanks to Carl and his team at NDGC for their normal efficient running of the event, plus my personal thanks to Julia for her admin and making my job just that bit easier.
