REVESBY COUNTRY FAIR

After weeks of preparation and anxiously watching the weather report the team from Lincolnshire CPSA committee and their helpers were all set to do their “thing” for the third year at Revesby Country Fair.

On offer was our very popular Have a Go stand and 2 competitions for the more experienced shooter, a 10 bird single barrel re-entry with a high gun prize of £50 sponsored by Gary Taylor Tree Services and 25 bird sportrap.re-entry with a high gun price of £100 sponsored by C R Duckworth Ltd, Landrover & Isuzu dealers.

The Have a Go stand soon built-up a small but constant queue of newcomers eager to try their hand at our sport as well as many returning visitors who had enjoyed the experience so much the previous year that they came back for more, often requesting the same instructor who had successfully got them hitting clays last year.  Our instructors patiently guided old and young, male and female through the basics of clay shooting to the obvious delight of everyone who took part.  Youngsters proudly carried off the empty cartridge case from their first hit and many achieved an improved score over their last attempt.

The competitions have taken awhile to get established as they had not been held here (or at any other country fair for that matter) for many years but we were pleased to note that word is now getting round and entries have increased year on year.  Some good scores for the sportrap started to come in.  Tim Wade and H Watson logged in a 20 as did Marvin Houghton who subsequently bettered this by 1 target.  Sean Hollingsworth and S Tynan went one better with scores of 22 but Billy Cooke from Blyton Shooting Ground was determined not to be beaten and on nearly the last squad of the day came in with a 23 to take the High Gun prize.

There was similar enthusiasm for the single barrel with a raft of 8’s appearing on the cards.  This was eventually beaten by Marvin Houghton and Don Wilson who both recorded a 9 and  decided to share the High Gun prize money instead of shooting off.

Although the day is hard work, all the team find it extremely rewarding to see so much interest in our sport and for people to get so much fun out of it.  After getting something of a soaking on the Saturday as the stand was being set up, the weather just about redeemed itself on Sunday by staying largely dry except for a brief 20 minute downpour over lunchtime.  215 people went through our Have a Go stand which doesn’t match our previous record but given the conditions was an excellent result.
