LINCOLNSHIRE CPSA AT REVESBY

OPEN CLAY TARGET SHOOT

It’s that time of year again, when once again the Lincolnshire CPSA road show heads to Revesby Country Fair to showcase our sport to the wider public.  We hoped that the recent spell of warm and sunny weather would stretch into this weekend but the forecast said 70% chance of rain pretty much all day so we planned for the worst and hoped for the best.  The end result was somewhere in between.  There were periods of very heavy rain but they didn’t last for long and it certainly didn’t stop our enthusiastic stream of “customers” hoping to break a clay.

Almost from the minute the show opened at 8.30 am we were making some noise and from then on, we had a steady stream of people, old and young, male and female, who “had a go”.  As always, there was much hilarity and joy as someone, particularly the youngsters, broke a clay for the first time and the inevitable competitions between family members and mates with various incentives from the loser buys the beer to the loser cooks the tea.  For our instructors it is a very busy, tiring day but, at the same time, very rewarding as realisation sets in that this is actually very good fun.  Many people come back year after year and many people have multiple “goes”.  Our record this year for one person was 13 – good to see you so many times John and look forward to seeing you next year.

Two competitions, DTL (single barrel) and sportrap were on offer for the seasoned shooter.  Returning for the second consecutive year was Tom Wykes.  Tom narrowly missed out on the top slots last year but again had to fight for it as his score was matched by Callum Aiken and Billy Caton.  With Billy having left the ground it was left to Tom and Callum to shoot off with Tom claiming the high gun prize of a £120 voucher sponsored by Grimme UK and Callum picking up the 2nd place prize sponsored by Stoneacre Isuzu.  Consolation for Billy is the opportunity to shoot at the prestigious Grimsthorpe Shooting Ground who kindly donated 100 practice clays.

In spite of some stiff competition from some very competent trap shooters the high gun prize for DTL was taken by Don Wilson with a perfect score of 10.  Second place went to Ben Scott who finished just one target back.  Both prizes of £50 were sponsored – high gun by Gary Taylor Tree Services and 2nd place by Advanced Fire Lincoln.

A huge thank you to all our sponsors, Stoneacre Isuzu, Grimme UK, Gary Taylor Tree Services, Advanced Fire Lincoln and Grimsthorpe Shooting Ground - your support is very much appreciated and helps to make the event a success.

Clay shooting at Country Fairs has been a feature of the Lincolnshire CPSA calendar since 2013 and every year various enhancements have been added.  For the last couple of years our “clay line” has been extended as our sponsors Stoneacre Isuzu and Grimme UK have joined us in our line-up.  This year’s enhancement, with the help of a very colourful display from Grimme UK, was an extension to our viewing and hospitality area which improved the experience for our audience.

Our volunteers are something special.  Many had put aside their own commitments to join us and everyone worked their socks off in spite of the rain.   A big thank you to committee members Paul Stennett, Donovan Jenkin, Brett Aisthorpe, Eric Cundall, Chris Bone, Mike Allen, Trevor Hawkins, Richard Thompson and Janet Stennett who were joined for the day by Phil Thomas, Marvin, Jackie, Dale and Albie Houghton, Karen Knowles, Dave Shepherd and Harry Hawkins.  Our sport benefits enormously from events such as this so keep up the good work.
