Notes
  • Question : How do I shoot for one of the Cornwall Clay Shooting Teams ?
    Answer :
The criteria for selection process for all teams is found on this website, however it is probably best to speak to the team manager of the team that you would like to try for in the first instance.
The contact details for each disciplines team manager are available on this website under the criteria page but please note that for a score to count at any County Selection shoot, regardless of which Ground it be on, then that Shooter must be fully CPSA Registered at commencement of the Shoot.

  • Please note : The selection process of the Cornwall teams varies depending on the discipline.

  • Question : Can I shoot in more than one team?
    Answer :

Yes - You may try to be selected for as many teams as you want.

  • Question : How is a shooter selected?
Please note : The selection process of the Cornwall teams varies depending on the discipline.
    As an example :

Last year (2016) the Cornwall English Skeet team had 4 selection shoots of 100 targets and a County Championship of 100 targets. You had to attend at least TWO selection shoots AND the County Championship to qualify for selection.
You could attend all four selections, if you wish, to give yourself a better chance of selection as your BEST TWO scores PLUS the County Championship score counted towards selection for the team.
Each shooter is given one point for each target BELOW the top score on the day.
The points for each shooter are added together to give you total points.
(2 selections PLUS the County Championships).
The TEN shooters with the LOWEST points totals are selected for the Cornwall English Skeet Team.
The team then attends the Inter-County shoot to determine the Southwest Region Team Champions.
The team also took two reserves in case of last minute issues.

  • Question : How is a tie for selection decided?
    Answer :

This will depend on the discipline but as an example - The best score at the Championship or Final is used initially. If there is still a tie then the last stand or round is used, If there is still a tie then the previous round or stand is used etc.
If there is still a tie or the previous process cannot be applied, then a shoot off will be organised by the team manager on a nominated date and time. Failure to attend would of course mean forfeiting your chance of being selected.

  • Question : Why is this selection process used - there must be a simpler way?
    Answer :

Each method has good and bad points.
The aim of the process is to select the strongest team possible.
The committee has found over the years that this method tends to select the strongest team with less issues arising.
    Features of this system are:-

    • There is no advantage in attending easier shoots as your points are allocated as the difference between your score and the best on the day.

    • You can increase your chances of selection by shooting more than the minimum number of selections.

    • If you cannot attend a couple of shoots you can still qualify as long as you attend the minimum.

    • The County Championships is the premier event of the year and so it has to be attended by all of the shooters trying for the team.

    • Everyone shoots the County Championships. This ensures that for one shoot the weather, conditions and targets are the same for all.

    • This system is also used to select some of the national teams.

  • Question : If I am selected for a team when will I shoot for Cornwall?
    Answer :

Congratulations - The selected team may shoot as the Cornwall Team at the Southwest Region or National Inter-County shoots to decide the Inter-County Champions. It is important that you keep in contact with the team manager as it is your responsibility to check the current date (they do alter sometimes) and arrange transport etc. The team manager will know the latest information.

  • Question : Are there teams for Ladies, Juniors and Veterans?
    Answer :

Yes. The selection is the same as for the main team but these teams are usually three shoooters. Most teams will allow you to shoot in more than one category. e.g. You may shoot in the main and junior team if you qualify in both.

  • Question : How do I know where and how many selections I need to attend?
    Answer :

The selection shoot dates and criteria will be posted on this website in the early part of each year and the dates are kept to the best of our ability so that holidays etc can be arranged however please be aware that sometimes they do alter.
The team manager for all disciplines is available on this website under the team criteria page.

  • Question : How do I earn those distinctive County Colours?

Answer:         We take great pride in our colours and are easily the most visible team to turn up at intercounty events. On successfully getting into, and then shooting for a Cornish Team you will be awarded free of charge a Cornwall County Team Cap - this is a one-off threshold achievement. Reserves, like in any major sport, do not earn Caps unless they 'shoot on the day for the Team'.

County Team Shirts are purchased through Committee exclusively for Cornwall Team Members at very reasonable cost and are only changed periodically so are not an 'every year expense'.

Each Team Member gets an enamel year-dated badge to adorn his or her skeet jacket or cap - these are awarded free of charge annually. Some of our experienced and annually successful shots have more badges than would fit on one cap (they still only get the one cap!)
