Hereford & Worcester CPSA
Pull! September 2024
July has been a great month for our shooters, both at grass roots and up to the world class level.
Well done to Fiona Reed for taking County and Lady Champion at our County UT Championships at Rugby. Changeable weather and a testing layout kept everyone on their toes but this was also the Area and IC championship and Fiona shot her way to Area Ladies Champion too.
Bywell hosted numerous DTL events in July. The ICTSF World DTL Championships at Bywell saw a number of our members on the podium. Congratulations to Dan Price taking runner up at his first World Championships with 889/900+72 and to Chris Moule, who took 3rd in AA and Runner-up in Veterans with 879/900+75 and finishing 6th overall. At the British Open DTL at Bywell, Chris Moule took England Veteran High Gun and England High Gun over 2 days as well as on the winning Veteran team. For the Home Internationals at Bywell, Chris was High Gun of the match, High Gun of England and the Veterans and on the winning Veteran team.
The Caesar Guerini Sporting Challenge at Barbury saw Phil Smith take 1st in AA and Veterans (140/150) and Connor Davies 2nd in Colts with 116/150.
Phil Smith also took County and Veteran Champion at Westfields for our county FITASC Championships on the 12/13th July. Runners up were Nick Rees and Charlie Drury. Junior Champion is Taylor Alderton, Colt Champion is Connor Davies and Lady Champion is Aimee Addison. Huge thanks as ever go to Steve and his team for hosting and their continued support and to everyone who supported the event.
The CPSA announced their OTR England team this month and we are delighted that 3 H&W shooters have made the grade. Congratulations go to Phil Sanders, Tim Smith and New Cap Charlie Morris. It has been great to see the progress Charlie has made over the weekly updates on Facebook and lovely to see his work and commitment achieve such a fantastic result. They will all be representing their country at the OTR Home International in August at the National Shooting Centre, Falkirk and we wish them all the best of luck.
Gloucester Clay Shooting Club hosted the Area and IC Olympic Skeet on the 21st July. Team H&W took gold in the IC and for the Areas; Mitchell Brooker-Smith was overall High Gun with 96/100 and Sophie Langton took 3rd overall and Ladies High Gun 85/100.
Gloucester also hosted our county Skeet Championship on the 28th July. Our new county champion is Taylor Alderton with 98 (also junior champion), runner-up is Brandon Smith with 97. Natalie Jones continues her unbeaten reign as Lady Champion with 86 and Veteran Champion is Brian Smith with 92. Lots of fantastic shooting and support from our members. Thanks as ever to Paul and his team for hosting, catering, refereeing so well.
Its lovely to see you all out and about. Keep up the practise and hard work, but most of all enjoy your summer shooting!
Pull! August 2024
June 9th saw our County All Round Championship kindly hosted by Park Farm Shooting Ground. A good turn out ensured plenty of competition for all entrants and added to the extra challenge of gusty winds and a chilly day! Thanks to Luke and his team for keeping everything running smoothly and the caterers for keeping everyone well fed and watered. Our County Champion and Veteran Champion is Tim Smith with 90, runner up is Matt Pugh with 88 and Lauren Oakes takes Lady’s Champion with 80. H&W members kept everyone on their toes with Brandon Smith and Natalie Jones the only 2 to straight the Skeet and Matt Pugh being the only straight on the DTL. Great shooting everyone!
The 8th June saw the British Open Double Rise at Bywell shooting ground where Chris Moule took Veteran High Gun with 85/100. Well done Chris!
Special mention goes to H&W youngsters Connor Davies and Aimee Addison for putting in some excellent scores in recent events. Connor took silver in Colts at the British Masters Compak at Dartford Clay shooting club on the 9th June and Aimee was top junior lady. They followed this with the Blaser Cup at Coleys shooting ground with Connor shooting 136/150 to take joint 2nd in A class and 2nd in Colts and Aimee joint second in B class with 127/150 (3rd in colts, 2nd in ladies). The Hodnet Challenge at West Midlands Shooting Ground also saw Connor take top Colt with 100/120. Fantastic scores from our rising stars.
Reminder – as per the email you should have received regarding the Area and Inter County ABT Championships being moved from the 14th July to the 24th August, we now have a new date for our County OT Championships. To avoid the inevitable clash this has now been moved to the 4th August at Griffin Lloyd.
Pull! July 2024
The Hereford and Worcester HELICE county championships, inter county championships and the West Midlands area championship took place on the 18th of May at Rugby shooting ground. A good entry on the day combined with good weather made for some high scores. After a very close contest Matt Pugh finished county champion, Paul Colley runner up, and Fiona Reed winning the lady’s title. The area results required a number of shoot offs where Paul Colley secured veteran bronze and Fiona Reed took silver in the lady’s category. Unfortunately, in the inter counties event we were unable to get into any of the medal positions. I would just like to say a big thank you to all who supported the team and to John Nightingale and Donovan Jenkin for hosting the event. Thanks to Matt Pugh for this report.
Our county ABT championships were held at Park Farm Shooting Ground on the 26th May. Congratulations to Tim Smith our County and Veteran Champion with 90, Runner up Craig Miles with 85 and Lady Champion Fiona Reed with 77. Thanks to all those who supported the event and Phil and the Park Farm team for perfect hosting.
The English Open Skeet championships were held at the National Clay shooting centre over the 24th-26th May. Newcomer to H&W, Lauren Oakes, put in an excellent performance having only started shooting skeet 8 weeks prior, to take second in C class with a solid 94. One to watch I think!
Further afield our county is very proud to have so many accomplished shots. Our congratulations go to Dan Price, Chris Moule and Jamie Marshman (New Cap) for qualifying for the 2024 DTL England teams representing England at the DTL Home International, DTL European and ICTSF World DTL.
In Junior Trap, Tom Betts finished fourth in the European Championships final in Lonato and then proceeded to hold his nerve to take Bronze with Leah Southall in the Junior Trap Mixed Pairs. Tom has now also been selected for the team for the Shotgun Junior World Cup in Porpetto, Italy in July. Congratulations Tom!
And finally, huge congratulations go to Mitchell Brooker-Smith as part of the Lonato European Championships Men’s Skeet team (with Freddie Killander and Ben Llewellins). Their combined score of 365/375 took them to the top of the boards to take team Gold!
Do you look at these competition results and think you’d like to have a go at a team event? The West Midlands Clubman event is being held at Park Farm Shooting ground this year on Saturday 28th September. This is a non registered CPSA event for a team of 12 shooters to have a go at an English Sporting course. If you’ve not shot for your county before but would like to take part please put your name forward to my email above or speak to Matt Pugh. We need a selection of shooters from C, B and A categories who would like to have fun in a supportive team environment. In this case it really is all about just taking part and enjoying the experience!
Pictured is Dan Price with the Chris Bayliss Memorial trophy for DTL in 2023 which he took with a combined score of 590. This is a county award for the two highest overall scores from three events (County, Area & Intercounty).
Pull! June 2024
On Sunday 21st April, Gloucester Clay Shooting Club hosted the Hereford & Worcester Olympic Skeet (OSK) County Championship. The number of entries may have been low but spirits were very much high as the small band of OSK shooters relished the Spring sunshine. After a tough first fifty targets, Mitchell Brooker-Smith was able to claim High Gun with a score of 92/100. Mitchell was followed by one of Hereford & Worcester's up and coming shooters, Sophie Langton, on 88/100.
Mitchell and Sophie have both been selected to represent British Shooting and Great Britain at the European Championship in Lonato, Italy. We wish them all the best and hope this has helped with their training and preparation.
Veteran High Gun went to Anthony Blandford on a score of 70 with Mitchell claiming Junior High Gun and Sophie claiming Ladies High Gun. Class winners were as follows; D Class-David Maddox, C Class-Sophie Langton, B Class-Lee Bowditch, A Class-Mitchell Brooker-Smith.
Thank you very much to Gloucester Clay Shooting Club for hosting another of our county championships. The team at Gloucester have always done their upmost to welcome Hereford & Worcester shooters with open arms and ensure their county championships are facilitated in the best possible way.
Thank you to the non-Hereford & Worcester shooters who ventured out in what has been a rather sporadic Spring season to support this event. Olympic Skeet is a discipline which, unfortunately, struggles to receive a long list of entries. Visiting various grounds and supporting them and one's discipline is the backbone of the sport. We must ensure it is a habit many shooters get into. (Huge thanks to Mitchell for this super report. Also a quick thanks go to Pat Smith for supporting our shooters and being photographer!)
Sunday 14th April saw the Area and Inter county Olympic trap at Fauxdegla. Our Senior team of Craig Miles, Tim Smith, Phil Sanders, Tom Burns, Tom Betts and Lee Betts did an amazing job taking Gold and, I am told, 35 shots clear of 2nd place! In the Area results Thomas Burns takes Silver with 91, and Tim Smith takes Silver in Veterans with 88. Our juniors, Thomas Betts and Charlie Morris, take Gold and Silver respectively. A great effort by our members for the county, well shot all!
Well done to Dan Price for taking High Gun at the 200 DTL Grand Prix at Holmes Chapel. Over the 20th and 21st April Dan shot 199/595 (shooting a perfect 100/300 on day 2!). Jamie Marshman was also on good form, taking 2nd in A class with 199/587.
Congratulations to all our shooters who took part in the English Open Sporting at Doveridge. Our highest member was Phil Smith with 105/120. Two of our colts were also on excellent form with Connor Davies top of B class and colt runner up with 103/120 and Aimee Addison putting in a great performance for such a short time in the sport of 90/120.
Finally, an important note for your diaries. Due to circumstances outside your committee’s control the amended date for the English sporting has been moved yet again. The new date is Sunday 15th September at Westfields. There will be new calendars going out but please let your friends know.
Pull! May 2024
Our members have been out getting in some good practise before the competition season firmly takes hold. Results from registered shoots have been good with H&W shooters often in the placings. Updates for these events are being added to Facebook more regularly and we love to hear about and celebrate your success.
Lyalvale trophy winner badges have arrived for our Juniors and Veterans and are being distributed. Names were in last month’s Pull! If our paths don’t cross very often and you would like your badge posted please email me your address at the above gmail contact.
A topic that is being widely discussed as shooters get together is the closure of a number of local grounds. We sadly can confirm that Throckmorton will not be continuing with its clay shoots but is still open for Air Rifle. We send our thanks and best wishes to Alan and Sandy for all the years of enjoyment, encouragement and knowledge they have shared. Grounds are facing many obstacles with red tape, noise issues and ever increasing costs. It goes without saying that our support for them is critical in keeping our sport alive.
In DTL the 23rd and 24th March saw the second round of the England team selection shoot, held at the Priory Shooting Ground near Kings Lynn. The H&W shooters going forward for selection are Chris Moule, Jack Ruane, Paul Cerri, Dan Price, John Mason and newcomer, Jamie Marshman. They shot under some very windy and cold conditions. The next round is being held at the North of England shooting ground at the end of April. We wish them all good luck. Thanks to Jerry Ruane for reporting.
We also send our congratulations to Tom Betts, Mitchell Brooker-Smith and Sophie Langton in their selection to represent British Shooting at the ESC European Championships in Lonato in May in OT and OSK.
And in a last minute addition I hear H&W youngster Connor Davies has won the Orston Masters 2024 Colt Section and takes home £100. Well shot!
Dates and locations for our County Championships are all up on our website and you should have received a printable pdf. Please let me know if this isn’t the case. Please continue to check our Facebook page for updates. Squadded events will require booking in advance with the host ground.
Pull! April 2024
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the John Hadley Memorial Shoot. The weather thankfully remained dry and we even occasionally saw the sun! Overall top gun for the John Hadley was Chris Moule but there were many good results that meant quite a few shoot offs! Congratulations to Wes Harris, Brandon Smith, Fiona Reed, Connor Davies, Aimee Addison and Taylor Alderton for their respective wins, too many to mention individually!
Our AGM followed and we’re very grateful for those who stayed on. No committee position was contested and all current members were happy to continue. As such your committee remains as follows; Chairman Rod Davies, Vice Chairman and Treasurer Fiona Reed, Secretary Karen Mackison and committee members Nick Stokes, Jerry Ruane, Matt Pugh, Brandon Smith, Harry Pugh and Phil Mackison. Our Chairman’s report can be found on our website on the welcome page and all uncollected county champion badges are behind the desk at Park Farm for pick-up at your convenience. Our raffle for 250 Pro-one cartridges was won by Darren Wood, congratulations!
The Chris Bayliss Memorial Trophy for DTL for 2023 goes to Dan Price and the Chris Bayliss Memorial Trophy for Sporting 2023 was presented to Phil Smith. (Top 2 scores to count from area, county and inter county results). Congratulations to them both and all our 2023 winners, we hope the new season finds you on the same fine form!
Huge thanks go to Park Farm Shooting Ground for hosting both the John Hadley and our AGM. Your time, energy and support are appreciated enormously, and we are very grateful.

Pull! March 2024
Welcome to H&W’s first update of 2024. We hope you have had a restful Winter season and are refreshed for our summer of County, Area and Inter County shoots. Date organising is under way with many preliminary dates on the website. Everyone has been hard at work this year to ensure as few clashes as possible with competitions. There are the inevitable couple but hopefully you will find these between disciplines that do not conflict with shooters. Please do check the website regularly for updates.
By the time this is published we will have had our AGM and our John Hadley Memorial shoot. We will update you on our committee and team managers in our next issue.
We are pleased to announce that both our Juniors and Veterans did well in the Lyalvale Inter County competition. Our Juniors (Harry Pugh, Connor Davies, Charlie Morris, Taylor Alderton, Oliver Moore, Aimee Addison) took overall 1st position and bring home the Lyalvale Junior Shield and £250 for the county. Our Veterans shared 1st place with Staffordshire and share the Veteran Lyalvale Shield and bring home £125. Well done to Wes Harris, Roy Spooner, Roger Cooper, John Tarplee, Andy Griffin, John Moore, Paul Colley, Patrick Kelly, Mark Bridge.
Our overall Senior team took 3rd place and the Ladies missed out on 3rd by 1 point. For the Gun Up Trophy, H&W took joint 3rd place and for the Gun Down Trophy, H&W took 2nd place. Huge thanks go to everyone who supports the county in these events, we appreciate your time, commitment, and skill. It should be emphasised that we are a very small county with approximately 350 registered members with a small proportion that regularly compete compared to some West Midlands counties that have almost 5 times the number of members and as such we are extremely proud that we perform so well. We were delighted this year to have improved on our previous year’s performance and importantly field teams for every event. You have to be in it to win it!
H&W would also like to congratulate all our shooters who make the CPSA Pull! Top Shots for 2023 including: Super Sporting; John Tarplee. Olympic Trap; Tom Betts, Lee Betts, Tom Burns, Phil Sanders. FITASC; Julian Morris, Dee Ward, Nick Rees. Helice; Matt Pugh, Fiona Reed, Paul Colley. Down the Line; Dan Price, Chris Moule. Olympic Skeet; Mitchell Brooker-Smith, Sophie Langton. ABT; Mark Lilly. Universal Trench; Fiona Reed, Phil Sanders. Congratulations go to all and best wishes for the coming season.

Pull! January / February 2024
West Midlands Inter Counties ESP on the 1st October
Held at Garlands shooting ground, the weather was dry in the morning but by the time we'd arrived the heavens truly opened. About 300 shooters on the course over the day made progress a bit slow but we stayed cheerful and enjoyed the targets.
Competition was tough but we appreciate every member who gave it their all. The Senior team (Matt Pugh, Phil Smith, Charlie Drury, Paul Harrison, Julian Morris, Brandon Smith) put in great scores but such was the day that the team was still placed joint 4th from 9 teams.
The Veterans (Wes Harris, John Tarplee, Andy Griffin) came 5th from 11 teams. The Ladies (Dee Ward, Natalie Jones, Karen Mackison) also 5th from 7 teams. The Juniors gave a fantastic performance (Harry Pugh, Connor Davies, Taylor Alderton) and scored 157, jointly first with Gloucester from 8 teams. Well shot!
H&W's top scoring competitor, Phil Smith was entered in the masters shoot off where he had a tough line of competitors from the other counties. Phil won the Rose Bowl trophy and £400, huge congratulations Phil!
Many thanks to Steve and his team, everybody who turned out to shoot for us and their families and supporters.
County Super Sporting Championships 22nd October
Our inaugural County Super Sporting Championship was held at Westfield on the22nd October. This proved to be a popular addition. Congratulations go to Phil Smith, County Champion on 94, Nick Rees closely behind as Runner-up on 93. Phil also takes Veteran Champion. Coaching News
Hereford & Worcester CPSA send our congratulations to Andy Herridge on receiving his Level 3 Senior Coach certificate.
Andy has completed all three CPSA Level 2 Coaching courses (ESP, ESK & Trap). This currently places him in the unique spot of being the only Senior CPSA Coach in Hereford & Worcester.
Andy says “When I’m learning about something I like to make sure I’m doing it properly and get a full understanding of the subject. It all helps me be in a better position to really help others.”
Those who know Andy will attest to his generous help. If you would like to benefit from his years of experience, knowledge, and the assurance (and importantly insurance) that comes with a CPSA Senior Coach, give him a call on 01568 708375 or find him at Park Farm Shooting ground, Ombersley.
We recognize and appreciate the time, commitment, and investment needed to attain this so again, we send our congratulations and wish him happy coaching!
AGM
Our AGM and fundraising shoot is on Saturday the 10th February 2024 at Park Farm Shooting Ground, Ombersley. The shoot will include Skeet, DTL and Sportrap, the AGM will follow at 3pm. The sporting will also be open for practice and catering will be available. We would love to see you but especially if you have won badges and trophies we would appreciate your attendance as due to GDPR it is difficult and expensive for the county to distribute these by mail. We also have the presentation of our beautiful 2 new trophies (Chris Bayliss Memorial) for Overall Top Shot in DTL and English Sporting. Do please come along and also perhaps consider whether you could volunteer your time and energy to help us on the committee in 2024, we are always appreciative and welcoming of members’ help and ideas going forward! Our present committee sends our best wishes to all our members for a happy, healthy 2024.
Pull! November / December 2023
Area and Inter Counties All Round on the 10th September
Held at the beautiful Doveridge Shooting Ground on an extremely warm, muggy day with showers. The weather didn't put off our H&W shooters who turned out a treat for this competition.
Area congratulations go to Rod Davies and Roy Spooner for both taking Silver in the Veterans on 82 and Connor Davies for taking silver in the Juniors (and winning C class!) on 80. Well shot all.
Inter Counties team results (2 out of 3 scores to count for teams other than Open)- Massive well done to our Veterans team (John Moore, Paul Colley, Roy Spooner) for taking Gold with 161.
Congratulations to our Junior team (Harry Pugh, Oliver Moore, Connor Davies) for taking the Junior silver medal with 154, gold was Staffs with 165.
Well done the ladies (Fiona Reed, Karen Mackison) for taking the bronze on 130, only 6 points behind Shropshire’s silver. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be the seniors day but thanks go to all those who committed their time and energy (Matt Pugh, Brandon Smith, John Smith, Phil Mackison, Rod Davies, Nick Stokes). Huge thanks to Doveridge for hosting on their wonderful grounds and the friendly, supportive referees.
Single Barrel County and Area Championships on the 24th September
Congratulations to our H&W members who shot in the Area and County Single Barrel Championships at Holmes Chapel Shooting Ground. I gather the wind picked up!
Well done to Dan Price taking Silver in the Area Open with 93. Also well done to Chris Moule taking Area Veteran Silver (91) and John Mason with Area Veteran Bronze (90).
Hereford & Worcester County Champion is Dan Price and Runner-up and Veteran Champion is Chris Moule.

In other events Phil Smith has been on good form taking high gun and shooting 99/100 at Barbury shooting school on the 13th September in their registered Super Sporting as well as being the top H&W member score in the British Open at Garlands with a 105/120 and a 60/75 on Finals day. Well done to all our members who took on the challenge of the British Open and great to see our sponsored youngsters, Connor and Aimee, putting in the hard work and gaining valuable experience, keep at it!
Annual General Meeting
It might seem early to be mentioning it but we have our AGM provisionally booked in for Saturday the 10th February 2024 so pop the date in your diaries now. Due to the low turnout last year at the village hall, the committee have decided this year to hold it at Park Farm after the fundraising shoot. The shoot will be set out to include Skeet, DTL and Sportrap and the AGM will follow with catering and a raffle as well as the County Champion badge and trophy presentation. We would love to see you all and welcome the opportunity to get together and hear your thoughts on how the committee can best serve you, our members, going forward.

Veterans Champion - Phil Smith (86), Ladies Champion - Natalie Jones (60), Junior Champion - Harry Pugh (64).
Inter Counties DTL and Skeet 20th August – An unfortunate calendar clash meant these two events falling on the same day. This proved a challenge for all counties to gather enough members to ensure full teams but I’m pleased to say H&W rose to the challenge. The encouraging team atmosphere and camaraderie meant a fun day with plenty of experience gained for the younger and newer members and something to build on. I’m pleased to say that H&W Veterans took silver in the Skeet and H&W Juniors took Gold in the DTL. Whilst our other teams may have not been in the medals they have done a wonderful job in taking part and helped gain our county valuable points in the Lyalvale Trophy. Huge thanks go to each and every member who turned out to support the county, including their friends and family!
STOP PRESS – Super Sporting Championship
Our county has been invited to join Gloucestershire’s Super Sporting Championship on Sunday 22nd October at Westfields. This is an opportunity to establish a new County championship for H&W if there is sufficient interest. West Midlands are looking at running an Area or even Inter County Super Sporting next year so this is an excellent chance to show your support and get in that much needed practise! Please contact Steve Lovatt to book on; 07342 338390.
Pull! August 2023
Sunday 4th June saw the H&W English Skeet County Championships held at Gloucester Clay Shooting Club. A beautiful sunny day with a breeze that made it slightly more of a challenge. High Gun for the day was Peter Chester from Wiltshire who deserves a mention for his 100 straight, well shot! Our County Champion is Matt Pugh who came through on the final squad to shoot a solid 98 with Brandon Smith so close behind on 97. Natalie Jones was joint High Lady for the day and our Lady Champion on 88. Tim Smith takes the Veteran Champion title with 94. Our thanks go to Gloucester for fantastic hosting as always, super referees and scorers and the wonderful caterers keeping us all sustained.
The H&W ABT county championships took place at Park Farm Shooting Ground on Sunday 11th June. Our Chairman Rod Davies took the County and Veteran titles with 89, very closely followed by Tim Smith on 88. Jackie Cotton takes the Ladies title and Oliver Moore our Junior title. Well done to all who took part and our thanks, as ever, to Park Farm for fabulous hosting.
On the 10th and 11th June at Westfield Shooting Ground our H&W FITASC county championships were held. Julian Morris retained the title with a 95, joint second were Phil Smith and Nick Rees with 90 (who both also share top Veteran title). Roger Ward also shot well on 89 to be top of the SuperVeterans category. Thanks to Steve for excellent targets, the ground looking immaculate and great levies. A good set of targets, catering for all abilities meant an enjoyable competition and although the weather threatened storms it thankfully held off for all.
The H&W HELICE county championships took place on Saturday 24th June at Rugby Shooting Ground. This also included the West Midlands Area and Inter Counties event. In very hot conditions Matt Pugh won the county title. Ladies champion was Fiona Reed and Paul Colley won the Veterans. Matt Pugh also finished joint High Gun and after a very close four way shoot off for the Area title, he managed to do the double winning this as well. Fiona Reed also won Area Ladies Champion too. With a tense wait at the end for the team results I’m very pleased to say we finished second on 41, first was Warwickshire with 44 and third was Staffordshire on 39. Thank you and well done to all that took part and thanks to Matt for reporting back.
In other exciting news; Phil Sanders, Tim Smith and Tom Betts have all earned places in the England OT team and Sophie Langton has earned her first cap as part of the England 2023 OSK team! Fantastic results everyone!
Pull! June 2023
Park Farm was host to our 2023 All Round County Championships on the 14th May (Gloucester’s and Shropshire’s too!) This ensured a good turnout and lots of competition for members. A misty start to the day soon cleared to gives us sunshine and mostly clear skies. Our Chairman, Rod Davies set a high standard early in the day, but members rose to the challenge with Matt Pugh taking County Champion on a fantastic 90, followed by Stephen Keating and Brandon Smith, both on 87. Taylor Alderton was Junior Champion hot on the heels of the seniors with an 82 and showing lots of future promise, our Colt Champion Connor Davies on 80. Rod Davies takes the Veteran title with 85 and Jackie Cotton our top Lady with 66. There was a lovely atmosphere and great camaraderie amongst the competitors, keen to help those new to the challenge and supporting of new friends made on the squad. Huge thanks to Park Farm, the referees, scorers and the catering, for keeping everyone well fed and watered and making an enjoyable day for all.
The County Olympic Skeet was at Gloucester Clay Shooting Ground on the 21st May. Congratulations to Mitchell Brooker-Smith for taking County Champion and County Junior Champion on 95, followed by Sophie Langton as Runner up and Top Lady on 86. Top Veteran was Anthony Blandford on 73. Well shot all. Thanks to the ground and all refs for wonderful hosting. Pictured is Dave Maddox, Club Treasurer, with the winners.
Congratulations further go to Mitchell Brooker-Smith for being selected for the Men’s Skeet at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup, Lonato and for the Mens and Pairs Skeet at the Junior World Championships in Changwon. The Junior World Championships will also host Tom Betts and Tom Burns in the Men’s Trap. We wish them all fine form and enjoyable competitions.
Tom Burns took Bronze medal in the British Shooting Series OT Men’s Juniors at Fauxdegla on the 13/14th May and Sophie Langton took Silver medal in the British Shooting Series OSK at East Yorkshire Shooting Ground in Junior Ladies. It is great to see our Juniors doing well and lovely to watch their progress.
As part of our commitment to our younger shooters we have now sponsored, as mentioned in the newsletter, a junior; Harry Pugh and a colt; Connor Davies. Both have received an allocation of £200 from the H&W committee to help with their training and development in the sport. Their hard work and commitment are a pleasure to see. Our Chairman has also applied for this funding to be matched from the West Midlands Committee for further youngsters so watch this space for updates.
In our more seasoned members: Julian Morris put in a fantastic performance at the Caesar Guerini Semi Auto Masters 120 bird at Barbury on the 29th April. Entering the last stand only one away, Julian tied for joint High Gun with Richard Faulds on 116. This resulted in a shoot off with Julian eventually taking 2nd place. Amazing shooting Julian! Dan Price has been selected as Captain for DTL at the HCIT 2023 and Chris Moule has been selected for the Veterans team. HCIT is at Cross Clay Pigeon Ground, Co Clare, Ireland. Paul Colley has been selected to represent GB at Helice in the Europeans in Ghedi and Nick Rees has been selected to represent GB in the Senior team at the World FITASC Sporting Championships in Gant, Hungary.
We love to celebrate our members success. Please send results, photos and updates to Karen at the above email address. Happy shooting all.
Pull! May 2023
Demand for places at some County Championships has meant some members experiencing difficulty booking, so we advise members to please book early where possible. To be able to run events, grounds will book first come, first served. We are very grateful that to accommodate the demand for the FITASC, Steve Lovatt of The Clay Shooting Company has put on an extra day on the 10th June at Westfields and hope our members show their support. Details for booking are on the website.
Round up of our members news for April:
Congratulations to Tom Burns for first place in the French Grand Prix, Junior Olympic Trap Champion 2023, with Tom Betts hot on his heels with 2nd place. In the Olympic Trap Shotgun Series Round 1 at East Yorkshire S.G. Thomas Betts took the top Junior spot demonstrating his continued great form.
Mitchell Brooker-Smith was on excellent form at the National Clay Shooting Centre to take first place in Round One of the Shotgun Series Mens Skeet as well as High Gun in OSK at the South Wales 2000 S.G for the two days running.
In Helice news, Paul Colley took 2nd place in the English Open Helice Championships Veterans section at Invicta Gun Club in Kent.
Amongst our younger members’ accomplishments for April worthy of mention, Connor Davies shot a personal best in English Sporting with an 88 at Westfields, never an easy course.
In our first County Championship of the year Tom Burns is our Universal Trench County Champion on 92 with runner up, Craig Miles a close 90 behind. Phil Sanders takes the Veteran title with Fiona Reed the top lady. Thanks to Fauxdegla for hosting and to all those who took part.
Congratulations to all our above members on their success and good luck to all our members in their own personal shooting goals over the coming season.
Pull! April 2023
As mentioned in our newsletter and on our website, following on from our AGM, the committee have decided to undertake a trophy audit. This will involve the collecting in of all trophies to enable us to check their condition, ensure all engraving is up to date and make sure everything is right, so they are ready for their next deserving host! If you can return your trophy to Park Farm this would be very much appreciated. Going forward this will mean the trophies can then be presented at an annual awards ceremony in the same way that many other counties do.
The results are in for the Lyalvale Shield. We are pleased to announce that our Juniors won their section and we as a county receive a cheque for £250 for their efforts. Well done to Harry Pugh, Connor Davies and Jack Harris. Unfortunately, we were not as successful in other areas, losing out on the Gun Up Trophy by 1 point and coming 3rd overall for the Lyalevale Shield. In some events for the Ladies, Juniors and Veterans, no team was presented, and this has a heavy price on our overall scores. Our Team Managers have identified areas for improvement, and we hope to field stronger teams across all areas in 2023. Please also remember that H&W are keen to encourage and support Juniors and Ladies shooting in Inter County teams. As such the West Midlands Committee pay Juniors Bird Only entries for team members at Inter County events and Ladies shooting as a team member in Inter County events can request their Bird Only entry fee to be refunded from the H&W Committee. More details on this, cartridges and Junior sponsorship can be seen in our Chairman’s newsletter which should be with you shortly and can be seen on our website. A hard copy will be sent out if HQ do not have your email address but please can you check that HQ have your current email address as this is the preferred method of communication with our membership. This can be done by logging into your CPSA account online, clicking on ‘My Membership’ and going to ‘Edit info’ where you can scroll down and check your correct email address is entered in the relevant field.
H&W congratulate Olympic Trap shooter Tom Betts on his selection in the GBR team for the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl in Germany in June. Check out his Athlete Story on the British Shooting website.
Chris Moule had some fantastic scores in the run up to the World DTL Championships in South Africa, scoring 299/100 and 300/100 at Holmes Chapel Shooting Ground. We congratulate his England selection and hope he enjoyed a wonderful competition.
Pull! March 2023
The H&W AGM was held on the 11th February at Ombersley Village Hall. The committee was elected as follows; Chairman Rod Davies, Vice Chairman Fiona Reed, Secretary Karen Mackison and Treasurer Fiona Reed. The following members were also elected to the committee; Nick Stokes, Jerry Ruane, Matt Pugh, Brandon Smith, Harry Pugh and Phil Mackison. At the request of members the meeting was moved to a village hall venue but turn out was low so we will be looking to move to a different format in the future. Members who weren’t present to collect their badges can email Karen with their address and they will be posted to you.
The Chairman’s report and newsletter can be found on the website but we would just like to highlight here our thanks for all those who support, host and attend our County events. Special thanks are given to Phil and Di Sanders and all those at Park Farm for their support in events and allowing us to base ourselves at their venue.
Our John Hadley Memorial shoot was held at Park Farm on the 11th February and raised a super £280 for charity. Overall High Gun for the day was Chris Moule. Chris Moule was top Veteran, Dan Price top Senior, Fiona Reed top Lady and Junior Overall was Aimee Addison. Chris Moule was on fine form to win the Skeet and Sportrap but denied the trio after a shoot off in the ABT, with Rod Davies the winner. Further results on Chris’ excellent recent scores will be in next month’s update.
H&W were sad to announce the passing of a well known member of our shooting community, John Boraston who passed away on the 3rd February aged 91. His obituary can be found in this month’s Pull!
On the international scene H&W send our congratulations to Tom Burns for his first place in Junior Men’s trap at the Portugal Grand Prix. Slightly further afield at the Qatar Grand Prix Mitchell Brooker-Smith brought home first place in Junior Men’s Skeet and Tom Betts first in Junior Men’s Trap. Well done All!
All the dates for the new season are now on the H&W website as well as the West Midlands Regional Shoots. As always, you are advised to keep an eye on the website as this is the primary source of up-to-date information and where any last minute changes will be published. Some grounds require telephone bookings in advance and their numbers can be found there. A summary is given below but a downloadable pdf is available on the website. H&W hope you all enjoy a wonderful season of competition!

The H&W County Skeet Doubles took place on Sunday 16th October. The weather was kind with clear skies, sunshine and a light breeze at the Gloucester Clay Shooting ground, kindly hosted by Paul Tudge. Steve Nutbeam was on fine form to take the County title with a score of 98 followed in runner up position by Brandon Smith with 94. Ladies and Junior title went to Sophie Langton with an excellent 85 and Connor Davies wins the Colt title on a score of 81. Well done all!
Looking forward to 2023 we would like to encourage more ladies to shoot for our county and as such the committee has a small fund to support any CPSA H&W ladies who shoot in any event for our Inter County Teams. The committee can refund their birds only entry fee if requested so do please get in touch. The committee are also looking into fundraising to help our members further; if you would like to help we would love to hear from you.
In case members are unaware we would like to highlight the Lyalvale trophy and it’s importance in funding for the county. Team entries are extremely important as they help ensure better rankings and top Lyalvale placings result in our club getting a prize fund that can go on to help support our members further. Ensuring we have committed teams across all categories is something we will strive for in 2023.
Finally, a date for your diary, The John Hadley Memorial Shoot will take place at Park Farm on the 11th February 2023 with 25 ABT, 25 Skeet and 25 Sportrap. Prizes will be on offer for the top shot in each category along with Ladies, Juniors and Veterans prizes with re-entry allowed BUT the John Hadley Charity event will be shot across ALL the three disciplines and will be based on your first scores.
The H&W CPSA annual general meeting will be held following this event at Ombersley Village Hall at 3.30pm where we would love to see you all and our County Winners can collect their badges. We always welcome new members to the committee and your input is invaluable in taking our sport forward. Finally, our committee wishes you all a Merry Christmas and a very happy 2023!

FITASC:
The Hereford & Worcester County FITASC Championship took place at Westfield shooting ground on the 13th & 14th of August. The targets set by Steve Lovatt offered something for everyone. Trying to build a score as the day went on though proved to be difficult not helped by the extremely hot
weather.

The Veterans title goes to Nick Rees with 80.
The Junior Champion with a score of 71 was Conner Davies.

February 2022.
A short report from Rod Davies Chairman of Hereford & Worcester CPSA:
I hope you have all had a Happy & Healthy New Year and will be able to attend as many County Championship shoots as possible this year along with the Inter County Team and Area events.
All the County dates will be on the website as soon as possible and we will get these sent out to you by email (if you have registered your email address with the CPSA).
I am including a taster of events at the bottom of this report but please keep an eye on the website as this is the primary source of up-to-date information as some of the dates may change at short notice.
Please be aware some grounds will only accept telephone bookings in advance of the competitions.
By the time you are reading this we should have had our AGM and John Hadley Memorial shoot which we will report on in the next issue.
However, we can announce that we are very proud of our Juniors for winning the West Midlands Juniors event and getting £250 for the County and of course very proud of our Ladies for also winning the West Midlands Ladies event and getting another £250 for our County.
Sadly we missed out on the Lyalvale Trophy by just 2 points!
But we have also won the West Midlands DTL Cup and the West Midlands “Gun Up” Trophy for Trap events for last year.
We are now looking for more Ladies and Juniors to take part in shooting with the County Teams so going forwards we are holding a joint taster day for both Ladies & Juniors at Park Farm Shooting Ground at a date to be agreed so watch out for this exciting event that has kindly been sponsored by CPSA Headquarters and by Hereford & Worcester CPSA.
Thanks for your continuing support of your County and don’t forget to send Fiona some pictures of any County or Inter County shooting events for our website.
