Essex All Round County Championship

Clacton Gun Club - Saturday 30th July 2022

The Essex All Round Championship 2022 took place on 30th July. Despite clashing with the National Game Fair and the British All Round Championship, it still had an excellent attendance of 40 entries.

Laurie Greenleaf posted an excellent score of 92 on the very first squad out. Dave Billington on the very last squad of the day posted a score of 93 to take the championship.

Rob Humphries scored 90 to take the Veteran Title, and there were no Juniors on the day. The colts (both of them) decided to draw on 74 in the competition which led to a shoot off using single barrel DTL as the layout. E Lockwood started with nerves missing the firs 3 target, whilst G Billington hit the first 3 making it look very one sided. As the round progressed Eddie rallied but it became clear that both were feeling the tension, and at the "unload and check scores" it was declared another draw on 17 each. It went to sudden death on peg 3 where Eddie hit the 1st target, and George missed his, giving Eddie the Colt title.

Overall - D Billington - 93

Vet - R Humphries - 90

Lady - K Durrant - 81

Colt - E Lockwood - 74

All Round County Championship

Clacton Gun Club - Saturday 8th June 2019

Saturday, 8th June was, without a doubt, a miserable day with heavy rain and strong gusting winds – not ideal conditions for the 2019 Essex All Round Championship held at Clacton Gun Club. A good turnout still made the effort and well done to all of you. K. Williamson took the Overall title and the Vets Championship with a score of 85. Katie Durrant (pictured below) won the Ladies Championship with 69, H Willis’s 74 won the Juniors and M Coham took the Colt’s title with 52. Thanks to Clacton G.C. for hosting the event.

All Round County Championship

Clacton Gun Club - Saturday 7th July 2018

The 2018 County All-Round Championship was held at Clacton Gun Club on Saturday 7th July in the middle of the current heatwave. The results were:

County Champion R. Baker 96

Veteran R. Sloley 89

Lady. K Durrant 85

Junior K. Durrant 85

Colt M. Terry 74

Thanks once again to Andy Riva and his team for once again hosting the Essex Allround, on a glorious summer day when the temperature climbed and climbed. There was unfortunately a shortage of shooters, I think that the football kept them away. Congratulations to all our winners.

Photo right shows shows Dave Bignell presenting Katie Durrant with the Ladies and Juniors trophies.

P.S. If anyone out there has any Essex Trophy's in there collections could you please return them to a member of the committee, so we can get them engraved.

Essex Allround Championship 2017

Oliver Wilde shot a fantastic 96 to win the 2017 Essex Allround Championship held at Clacton GC on the 14th October 2017. Despite the time of year, the weather was good for the event.

The third squad saw Essex shooter Oliver Wilde set the pace shooting 24/24/24/24: this proved the score to beat on the day, and could only be equalled by Pauline Chapman of Suffolk who won the Bellinger trophy for her efforts. It was nice to see junior and colts at this championship so well done to them. The full list of champions was:

  • County champion Oliver Wilde 96
  • Lady champion Pam Dorrington 74
  • Veteran Champion Keith Williamson 89
  • Junior Champion Harry Willis 66
  • Colt Champion Mason Terry 72

Many thanks to Andy Riva and all at Clacton Gun Club for hosting this event.

Inaugral Essex vs. Suffolk Challenge Trophy

On August 29th at Clacton Gun Club there will be an addition to the normal Essex Allround challenge this year. Essex and Suffolk CPSA have arranged a trophy for the best five guns from each county to have their scores added together, and the County with the highest total will have the trophy and the glory until the next challenge, the date, venue and discipline (skeet, sporting DTL, etc.) will be chosen by Suffolk CPSA. We hope to have at least two shoots per year so one will be in Essex and one in Suffolk and so on, and we hope to cover as many disciplines as we can.

So come on Essex shooters lets try and show these Suffolk boys and girls what we are made of on the 29th!

Essex Top Nationals at Allround Championships 2016

On Sunday 25th October the Essex team of shooters met at Northampton gun club to take part in the All-round National championship, one shooter had chosen not to turn out but shoot at another shooting ground so it is with great thanks to Zac Palmer for stepping in at the very last second to make a full team.

The conditions were warm and sunny for the time of year but the light conditions made the blaze targets on the DTL, Ball trap and skeet very hard to see clearly and this was reflected in the scores that were coming in to the club house.

When the shooting was over it was a long wait before the final scores were calculated and the Essex team were Victorious winning by a healthy ten target margin in the seniors event and coming third in the veterans.

It is time for a special mention to Lewis Steed who shot like a true champion hitting a  magnificent 94 on his way to taking the high-gun prize, and title of National inter-counties champion, and winning by four targets over his nearest rival.

In the Essex team were:

Scott Greenfield

Robert Humphreys

Peter Humphreys

Paul Brewster

Patrick (MAC) McLauchlan

Laurence Greenleaf

Lewis Steed

Zac Palmer

Dave Bignell

Well Done and thanks to all.

All scores to be found on CPSA website.

Essex Ladies Triumph Again 2016

The Essex ladies did it again by becoming the national inter-counties champions at Allround. The team of two, Judy Lock and Pam Dorrington, won by a clear five targets over the second place team from Northants, with Judy taking the individual ladies high gun.

The senior team of Paul Brewster, Chris Orrin, Lewis Steed, Laurence Greenleaf, Robert Humphreys and Adam Cocker Tried their best to retain the title but were just pipped to the post by Suffolk and the 2016 champions Northhants so well done to them.

The Veteran team of Bob Cooper, Peter Humphreys and Dave Bignell came in second to Bedford.  Bob Cooper shot like a champion beating his PB on the ABT by three targets.

Well done to all who took part and thanks to Martine and all at Northampton GC for making the day so enjoyable.

Essex All Round Challenge 2015

The Essex Allround challenge took place at Clacton gun club on the 22nd August 2015, the weather was giving the shooters a treat as the air was still and hot and the scores reflected the conditions with some high scores. Thanks to all at Clacton Gun Club for such a good shoot.

Winner and champion was P Mayhew with 96 joint runner up were L Greenleaf and A Stephenson both on 94.

All Round County Championship

Clacton Gun Club - Saturday 11th July 2015

Essex CPSA allround championship held at Clacton GC 2015.

Thanks once again to Andy Riva and the Team at the Clacton gun club for hosting the 2015 Essex Allround championship on Saturday 11th July. It was a  lovely summers day, with the sun shining and only a light breeze. All shooters started on the sporting layout that had some excellent targets set over four stands with a very good variation of speed and distance, followed by skeet, DTL single barrel and ABT to finish.

At the end of the day with all the scores checked, the winner of the Ladies title was Pam Dorrington who retained the trophy for another year. Sadly, there were no Junior or Colt entries.

Moving onto the seniors there was a tie for first place between Robert Humphreys and Dave Bignell both having shot 90/100. The shoot-off discipline was decided by a draw made by the staff of Clacton GC which determined that it was to be held over 25 skeet targets. At the end of the 25 skeet both shooters had the same score yet again on 23 each so it was onto stands 3,4,& 5 for a doubles miss-and-out final. With more than his fair share of luck (his words!) after six doubles Dave Bignell was the final winner meaning that he had retained the Allround and Veterans titles for another year.

Report

It is thanks again to Andy Riva and his team of rain soaked helpers that made this event a great success, on a day of typical bank holiday weather the rain held off for the first four squads to go through then the heavens opened and did not stop for the rest of the day. Despite this there were some tremendous scores but the enteries were down on previous years. Thanks to all who attended and we hope you have dried out by now.

All Round County Championship - Clacton 2014

It's thanks yet again to Andy Riva at the Clacton Gun Club for hosting this year's Essex Allround championship. The early starters put together some good scores with Lewis Steed setting the pace with a splendid 92, the Sporting layout taking more casualties than normal due to a tricky 3 pairs on stand one.

Later in the day Paul Burrows and Robert Humphreys matched the 92 of Lewis. With only two shooters left to shoot, and only one of them from Essex, Lewis was contacted for a possible shoot off. The last Essex shooter was the Veteran Dave Bignell who kept the 92 boys waiting until the very last shot of the competition to come in with a 93 thereby taking both the Essex championship and the Veterans title.

The Ladies champion was Pam Dorrington. Unfortunately there were no junior or colt entries.

All Round Challenge – Clacton 27th August 2012

Rob Butters

August Bank Holiday Monday in the UK traditionally has a big question mark when it comes to the weather. It seems that Clacton Gun Club are able to order the weather to suit all year and this day was no exception. No rain, plenty of sunshine and the wind turned up just a little to allow the targets to act like the quarry they are meant to represent.

Even the radio warning of an escaped Lion very close to the ground did not deter 67 competitors from enjoying the weather and the excellent competition.

Squad one, peg one can bring additional nerves into a challenge day. Rob Butters from Suffolk chose or was chosen to take the honourable position. About 90 minutes later he returned to the clubhouse having set a score of 95 for those who followed to attempt to beat.

Steve Miller who hadn't attended the ground for some time came close with 92, Mike Worsfold who has a reserved chair in the clubhouse as he rarely misses a Clacton date also posted 92. Eric Chapman, well known for his ability, also 93. Could anyone challenge the first score? Paul Fulcher tried, and came back with 93 and the runner up spot.

So first score was the best! Well done Rob.

Essex All Round Challenge - 29th August 2011

Michael Winters

The Essex All-Round Challenge 2011 was held at Clacton GC where it was a dry day with moderate winds increasing through the afternoon, making the targets ever more difficult.

Oliver Wilde and Paul Brewster yet again led the field for most of the day with scores of 92.

Later that afternoon, Michael Winters took the lead with a superb 95, R Grosser from Suffolk coming close on 94. Later still Eric Chapman, another great Suffolk shot, came home also with a 95 after missing the last target on the ABT layout!

A great Shoot-off followed on the ABT where Michael Winters scored 24 to Eric Chapman's 22, thereby becoming 2011 Challenge Champion.
