Helice County Championship
Invicta - 19th May
The beautifully scenic hillside that is Invicta shooting ground in Tonbridge, Kent, was the venue for the Essex Helice Championship and Essex Helice shooting Team selection shoot. While the day started a little overcast, the wind was kind and weather relatively warm. Despite the good shooting weather those pesky ZZ birds still proved very difficult for some of us. Not so for young Mason Terry (14 yrs old, pictured below) who when the dust had settled, took the overall champion title and is now the youngest Essex Helice champion of the last decade. Alongside him Jessica Byard (12 yrs old) continues her recent good form and secured the Essex Ladies champion title while stalwart Graham Woodman took the veteran title.
The rest of us had to settle for a great day out and a place in the Essex team. A massive thank you goes to Chris Potter and the entire team at Invicta for hosting the event and organising everything for us and of course the ladies in the kitchen that as always kept us fed and watered throughout the day. If anyone hasn’t tried ZZ / Helice, you really should give it a try, you never know, you may just find a hidden talent for it and go on to represent GB internationally as I have had the pleasure to do. To all the other non essex, Helice shooters that attended today’s shoot, well done all, see you soon we hope.
Essex Helice Championship – 9th June 2018 at the A1 Shooting Ground
Today saw the Essex Helice Championship and team selection take place at A1 shooting ground in glorious weather. After the dust settles some great scores had been placed by both Essex and non Essex Shooters and the High Gun as well as championship were won with a very credible 22/24. Results were very good in all categories and as a result it lolly’s like Essex may well field a strong team in the coming Inter County Championship this September. Full results were:
High Gun and Overall Champion - Lee Byard 22/24
Colt Champion - Mason Terry 20/24
Ladies Champion - Jessica Byard 18/24
Senior Champion - Graham Woodman 18/24
Veteran Champion - Peter Hoare 15/24

The day was perfectly managed by Claudio and Teresa and all of their team at A1 shooting ground who work so hard to ensure that the shoots run smoothly despite ZZ targets and traps doing their very best to upset things ????. Big thanks to all the other British Helice shooters for joining us today and making the shoot so much more enjoyable and a special mention to Sandie Bucklerfor her help and guidance today and of course presenting all of the trophies and badges to everyone. Roll on the Inter-Counties ????
Essex Helice Championship – Sat 22nd April 2017 @ A1 Shooting Ground
With contestants in every category except Juniors, the Essex Helice shooters were joined by a number of GB Team and other Helice shooters for a tough competition on a somewhat chilly morning this Saturday at A1. Claudio and his team put on a brilliant event as always and some great scores were achieved, not least of which were the 2 straights achieved by the 2017 Essex Champion Graham Woodman and GB Junior, Fletcher King who never missed a thing all day. Graham was joined by Peter Hoare who was crowned Essex Veteran Champion, Bill Logan (Snr) Essex Super Vet Champion and Jessica Byard who won the Lady and Colt Categories to be crowned champion in both. The Essex Helice Team were selected form the 5 best scores for the Senior team, the highest scoring Vet, Super Vet and Colt and are conformed as: Graham Woodman, Lee Byard, Troy Petherbridge, Conner Logan, Phil Dyer, Peter Hoare, Bill Logan (Snr) and Jessica Byard and they will go on to compete at the ZZ intercounty shoot in September on behalf of Essex.

Despite these conditions no-one managed to straight the competition, with Lee Byard leading the Essex pack with 12/15. Bryan Freeman won through in the Vets category and Pam Dorrington took the Ladies title.

Bryan Freeman only dropped one target to take the vets title and Pam Dorrington was the ladies champion.

ZZ Championshipship
There was a good turnout for the 2014 ZZ Championships held on the 17th May at the A1 Shooting Ground on a beautiful, calm, summy day. The 15 target competition was shot over two layouts, creating even more of a variation in target flight. The competition was so close that it was effectively decided on each competitor's last three targets.

ZZ County Championship – A1 SG 9th April 2011
The A1 Shooting ground hosted the Essex ZZ Championship on the 9th of April. It was a warm but windy day and none other than Billy Logan emerged victorious with a near perfect score, missing the very last bird for 14 ex 15.
