Southdown Gun Club - Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th Match 2019

Essex achieved a creditable fourth place in the South East Region Inter-counties Championship, held at Southdown Gun Club over the weekend of the 16th/17th March. Stuart Clark shot 93/100, just two shots behind the overall winner, Guy Franklin from Sussex, but the remainder of the team just never managed to meet their own high expectations in difficult conditions.

South Eastern Inter-Counties Sporting Tournament 2018

Southdown gun club hosted the 2018 S.E. Intercounties sporting over the weekend of 6th and 7th of May. Essex fielded a full team comprising of Seniors Clive Scase, Adam Cocker, Phil Hayden, Alex Higgs, and Nigel Gilder, Veterans Frank Haigh, Ladies Nadine Gilder, Juniors Harry Willis and young Ryan Dodds as the Colt.

New cap Clive Scase put in the highest score for the team with a strong 85 round on what proved to be a testing course given that it was also an England selection shoot. The team came away in 7th place overall on with a total of 399 with Kent putting in a score of 442 to be crowned S.E. Champions. Well done to all team members who gave it their best shot and thank you for putting in the effort, the next shoot for the Team will be the National Inter-Counties on the 6th and 7th of october at Orston shooting ground.

Essex Sporting Team Announced 2018

Following the final sporting selection shoot kindly hosted by the Highwayman shooting ground on the 29th of April the team has been selected. The day was bitterly cold with bitting winds and rain which didn't make for pleasant shooting conditions. However, this did not stop a keen few individuals venturing out to shoot the last selection shoot.

A great variety of testing targets were presented to the competitors with Essex veteran Fran Haigh posting a superb 86 to lead the Essex contingent. The Essex team for 2018 that will represent the county on the 6th and 7th of May at the S.E. Intercounties held at Southdown gun club can be found here - sporting-selection-table.

Well done to all who made the team and good luck for the Intercounties.

Second Sporting Team Selection Shoot 2018

The second sporting team selection shoot took place at Badnock's Farm on the 1st April on a cold, damp, and windy day. Phil Gray had set a testing set of targets for the large entry. Ian Schwier was the early leader on 93, but this was soon equaled by a solid performance from Stuart Clark and overtaken by Robert Humphries on 94. The ground apologised for an un-repairable trap breakdown and for a few no-birds, but on the whole it was a good shoot. Many thanks to Bradley at Badnock's for agreeing to host this event, to Phil Gray for the layout, and to all the participants for braving the weather! A full list of the results can be found on the Badnock's website.

National Sporting Inter-Counties Tournament 2017

The National Intercounties english sporting was held at Eriswell shooting ground in Suffolk on the 14th and 15th of October. Very unseasonable warm weather conditions, with temperatures getting up into the 20s, greeted competitors from all over the country who were testing their skills against targets set by Phil Moss who had set a wide variety of targets from floppy floaters to fast 1/4ing away simultaneous pairs off a tower which caught quite a few people out. Held over 14 stands, there was something there for all abilities.

Despite their best efforts Essex couldn’t quite get the team scores together to get a placing in the top 3, finishing in 7th place overall with Yorkshire taking top spot in the seniors. The Essex team consisted of:

Seniors   Stuart Clarke

               Oliver wilde

               Adam Cocker    (New Cap)

               Chris Orrin

               Keith Williamson

               Lewis Steed

 Ladies     Nadine Gilder

                 Amanda Foster

                 Kathy Curtis   (New Cap)

Many thanks to all those who put the effort in to shoot for the team and a special mention to Stuart Clarke who shot a fantastic 94 which was the highest scoring team member and also took 3rd place overall.

Essex Sporting Championship - 2017

The 2017 Essex Sporting Championship took place over the weekend of the 26th and 27th August at Hepworth Hall. The title was won by Peter Hoy on 94. Stuart Clarke also shot 94 but was not there at the end for a shoot off so Peter took the honours.

Veteran was Keith Williamson, there was no junior competitor but Ryan Dodd was Colt champion and Cathy Curtis was lady champion.

Essex vs. Suffolk Challenge 2017

The second challenge between the two counties took place at Barrow Heath on 20th August utilising an excellent sporting venue following the All-Round competition at Clacton Gun Club in 2016.

This challenge was created between the two counties, as they are in separate Regions and never meet in any CPSA competitions except at the Nationals events. The two counties are often found at each other’s county grounds and so it made sense to have a regular showdown.

Each year the competition alternates between the two counties with the host county being allowed to choose the discipline. There is no levee raised at this competition allowing it to run alongside any levied competition without causing issue. The top 5 scores from each county are totalled and highest wins.

Last year, Suffolk won the Title and Essex were keen to add their name this year. 148 competitors in total shot the event, 27 from Essex and 57 from Suffolk.

The top scores are below: -

Essex                                                                                Suffolk

K Norfolk                             91                                           SE Smith                             93

Both Counties thank Barrow Heath for holding the event. It will be Essex turn to choose the venue and discipline for 2018.

South East Inter-Counties Sporting - 2017

On Sunday 7th may the South East inter counties sporting was held at Southdown gun club. Ideal shooting conditions made for a very enjoyable round with overcast skies and a light breeze - not quite shirt sleeve weather but still pleasant to be out in the Sussex country side. As usual the Southdown team put on a fantastic array of targets with some needing a decent gap others just deceiving angles.

Credit to the Essex team putting in some fantastic scores across the board with Chris Orrin leading from the front posting a very strong 90, unfortunately one senior member had an off day which cost the team a placing. Sussex put together a very strong team resulting in them coming out on top with Essex taking fourth place overall with a score of 428.

Three people stood out on the day for Essex:

  • Firstly young, up and coming colt, Ryan Dodds put in an superb 76 equaling one of the senior teams scores. Well done Ryan I’m sure you be seen many more times in the county team;
  • Young junior shot, Harry Willis, posted a very respectable 73 upholding the junior side of the team. Fantastic score Harry and, like Ryan, I’m sure you will be making a lot more appearances for the county
  • Last but not least regular team member Nadine Gilder posted a brilliant 85 for the ladies - very consistent as usual Ned well done.

Senior Team Scores:

  • Chris Orrin 90
  • Keith Williamson 89
  • Stuart Clarke   87
  • Lewis Steed   86
  • Oliver Wilde   76

Also a mention to Ian Schwier who shot a fantastic 95 taking JNT1st in AA but unfortunately was not on the team

Badnocks Farm Selection Shoot

The second County sporting selection shoot was held by kind permission of Bradley Faulkner at Badnocks farm on the 26th of March. Very strong winds on the day made the targets extremely tricky which reflected on the scores.

Four people all tied on 92 at Southdown Gun Club in the first of three Sporting selection shoots - A. Cocker, S.M. Clarke, O. Wilde, and L. Steed. P Hayden is only a few shots back on that leading pack, with everything to play for at Badnock's Farm and Highwayman's over the coming couple of months. Please see sporting-results and sporting-selection-table for more details and the full results table so far.

The first of three county sporting selection shoots was kindly hosted by Southdown Gun Club on the 12th of March which provided good shooting conditions of fine weather in the morning but with slight drizzle in the afternoon. The Southdown team put on a great variety of quality targets as expected and there was some exceptional shooting by several people hoping to make the team. In total 21 shooters from Essex made the journey to the rolling countryside of the Southdowns.

Well done to all who made the journey and competed in the event.

The current lead position is shared by no less than four competitors all on 92:

Adam Cocker shot a very respectable 94 at clacton gun club SPT on the Saturday, Sunday shooting a 92 on the ESP and a 96 on the SPT at Southdown and winning A Class, then on to Horne to post a strong 90 again on the sporting - great shooting from Adam.

National Inter-Counties ESP Tournament 2016

The National inter-counties sporting championship was held at the Highwayman shooting ground in Suffolk over the weekend of the 24th and 25th of September. The shoot comprised 100 targets shot on either day but on both days the ground was battered by strong gusting winds making the targets ever more tricky and catching a lot of even the more experienced shots out.

The ever consistent Ian Schwier tackled the course on Saturday morning returning to the club house posting a very solid 86 which was to remain the highest score out of the Essex team. Our neighbours, Suffolk, claimed the top spot with a score of 432 ,Essex came in 5th place with a score of 397. Unfortunately only 7 counties entered teams for the event yet there were over 260 individual entrants over the weekend.

A special mention to Amanda Foster on being selected to shoot for the county for the first time - well done Amanda!

A big well done to Simon Smith of Highwaymans shooting ground for putting on a first class shoot that ran smoothly over the two days

Second Sporting Team Selection Results

Southdown Gun Club hosted the second and final Essex Sporting Team Selection Shoot on Sunday, 28th June 2015. Top score on the day went to O Wilde on 87. The full results can be seen on the sporting-selection-table page of the website. Thanks very much to Helen and the team at Southdown for putting the event on.

The team will be announced in due course.

First 2015 Sporting Selection Shoot Results

Many thanks to Phil Moss and his team at Barrow Heath Shooting ground for hosting the first of the Essex Sporting selection shoots. Forty two Essex shooters took part in what was a high scoring event that was held along with the Russ Wall memorial shoot, the weather was warm and sunny with only a slight wind and there was a very good selection of high quality targets set over twelve stands. It seems a pity that we did not have a single junior or colt enter lets hope they turn up for the next selection shoot at Southdown.

See sporting-selection-table for the current standings.

(Dave Bignell)

The 2015 Essex Sporting Championship was held at Hepworth Hall 04/10/2015.

Winner Scott Greenfield
Lady June Speakman
Veteran Jeoff Bone
Colt Ryan Dodd

Report.

The weather was super for October - warm and sunny with hardly any wind, and the 100 targets over 12 stands were, as we would expect from John Dyson, well worth the entry fee so a special thanks to him and his team at Hepworth Hall for hosting the event.

At the end of the shoot there was a three way tie with Scott Greenfield, Stuart Clarke and Lewis Steed all with a score of 92. As Scott was the only one to stay he was awarded the championship. Lady champion was June Speakman  84, Veteran Champion Jeoff Bone 88 and Colt Champion was 12 year old Ryan Dodd with a very good 61. The awards were handed out by John Dyson and Luke Riddington to end what was a most enjoyable day.

This was also the first selection shoot for the 2016 season - see sporting-selection-table for the latest positions.

National Inter-Counties Sporting Team

Thanks to all the Essex shooters who ventured forth to Barrow Heath to shoot the National intercounties Sporting. Phil Moss and his team put on what I think was a very good shoot with targets to suit all, even if a little harder than normal with some awsome pairs. The results can be found on the CPSA website for those interested, unfortunatly Essex did not figure in the prizes. I would like to say how well our three juniors/colts did, all had what I think were scores to be very proud of. (Dave Bignell)

2014 Sporting Team Selection

On a glorious early spring day on the 16th March at the Barrow Heath Shooting Ground over forty Essex guns turned out for this year's sporting team selection. Scott Greenfield led the way for the seniors with a fine 91, closely followed by G Garrod on 89 and Luke Riddington on 86. PR Brewster was next with 84 and Paul Burrows shot 83.

Dave Bignell led the vets on 79 and Tracy Riddington was the highest scoring lady with 76. J Garrod was the best colt with 71 with J Hayday the best junior.

British Open 2013 – Hepworth Hall

This year the British Open came to Essex. Yet again we saw John Dyson and his team put on an excellent and smooth running shoot. There were many challenging targets over 15 stands one being a close rabbit, of which I heard many shooters struggled with. The British Open saw Mark Winser leading the sporting until the last day where Sam Green levelled with him on 111. After a tense shoot off, Sam came out on top missing only 1 clay in the shoot off. I would like to say a very well done to Sam and also well done for John and his team for putting on another excellent shoot. I am sure after the British Open everyone is looking forward now to the Masters next year.

Essex Sporting Championships At Hepworth Hall 2013

This year’s Sporting Championship returned to Hepworth Hall again. For the 15th time Stuart Clarke won and this time with a Zoli over and under. Stuart had, had recoil problems with over and under’s for 13 years. He shot 92 to win the title. The Essex Lady was Tracey Riddington who shot an 80 and the Junior was Jack Greenleaf who shot an 88. Unfortunately i didn’t find out who the Vet was so apologies.

Essex Club Championship - Arnold's Farm 27th May 2013

Once again the ‘Essex Club Championship’ is to be held on the Spring Bank Holiday.

The event is designed strictly for CPSA affiliated clubs however there will also be an ‘Essex Team Competition’ for those who do not belong to a formal club but still wish to shoot competitively.

For full details and entry instructions please click here.

Essex Gun Master – Hepworth Hall 10/04/2013 – 14/04/2013

The time of year came round again for the Essex Gun Masters at Hepworth Hall. The event seems to come up fast every year. Yet again John Dyson put on some excellent targets with his classic high tower stand which I am sure got the better of a lot of people. The week seemed to run very smoothly with the help of all of the people there. Unfortunately on a few occasions the weather may have got the better of some shooters with very heavy rain and strong winds but putting that aside it is always a great week to get involved in and always well worth the money to shoot it. This year there was even a couple of Essex shooters that won a gun as well which makes things even better. The British Open is being held at Hepworth Hall this year also, so it would be a great opportunity for as many Essex shooters to get involved as it’s not often a big event comes to Essex. To view the top scores of the week please click here.

Sporting Selection Shoot – Cambridge 31/03/2013

Cambridge held the 4th and final Essex selection shoot. This seemed to be a little more testing for many people. The winds did pick up quite a bit and there and there was even a few snow showers and sunny spells. The highest Essex shooter this time being Nigel Gilder with an 84. To see the full scores from this event please click here. And to see the completed selection table after all 4 selection shoots please click here.

Sporting Selection Shoot – Barrow Heath 29/03/2013

Barrow Heath held the 3rd sporting selection shoot on Good Friday this year. The weather wasn’t too bad with little wind and occasional sunny periods. There was many high scores but Scott Greenfield was the highest Essex shooter with an impressive 96, strongly holding him in first place in the Essex selection table. To view the full scores from this even please click here.

A very stiff test awaited Essex hopefuls at Barrow heath on a fine sunny day with little wind. A few guns managed to reach the 80s including our own Luke Riddington with many famous names trailing behind in the 70s.

Helena Romanes Secondary School take victory at The National Schools Challenge

Last month Kevin reported on the coaching appeal with regards to Helena Romanes School in Great Dunmow. I am pleased to report that 10 boys from the school recently attended the National Schools Challenge and actually returned home with the winning prize of a 410 shotgun and a trophy. They entered 2 teams and even the second came third considering this was the first time that most of the boys had ever shot a competition they did an excellent job, especially being one of the only Comprehensive schools competing.

Sporting Selection Shoots

If you would like to represent Essex at the South-East and National Intercounty competitions you will have to qualify via the Selection shoots we hold each year. These are normal registered shoots except that your score is also recorded onto a selection table and the best scores then count towards team selection.

Teams are made up as follows:-

South-East Intercounties: 5 Seniors, 1 Lady, 1 Veteran, 1 Junior, 1 Colt.

National Intercounties: 6 Seniors (5 to count), 3 Ladies (2 to count), 3 Vets (2 to count), 3 Juniors (2 to count).

Once again the S/E Intercounties are to be held at Southdown on 20/21 April and the National Intercounties this year will take place at Kegworth on 05/06 October. As the S/E event is early again this year and bearing in mind other key events, we have had to squeeze the selection shoots into a fairly short time window.

Barrow Heath 17th Feb - now under the management of Phil Moss, the ground goes from strength to strength offering great target variety over a magnificent rolling landscape.

Southdown 3rd March - always a pleasure to visit Southdown and ideal practice as it will be the venue for the S/E Intercounties. For directions please visit their website.

Barrow Heath 29th March - another chance to secure a place, this time on Good Friday, Easter weekend.

Cambridge 31st March - a new venue for selection which already attracts a number of Essex shots. Mick & Karen have invested heavily in ground and facility improvements and in 2013 will be hosting the East Midlands Intercounties. Events here are squadded/telephone entries.

This year you can perm any 2 from 4 scores to count towards selection - the results will be regularly updated on this site.

Malcolm Clarke
High Gun Winner of the very popular and prestigious Essex event
2012 Paglesham Annual Charity Clay Shoot

Essex Club & Team Shoot - Arnold's Farm 5th June 2012.

Simultaneous Teal with R/L Crow over water and sheep!

Twenty-twelve saw another bumper entry to this very popular event. There are in fact two competitions running simultaneously one for Clubs and the other for Teams - this enables Essex guns who do not  belong to a local club to form a team and enter that way.

The targets were a bit stiffer this year but offered an excellent challenge which Dennis Webb took face-on to set the pace with 93 ex100 and so gaining the individual title. Dennis was closely followed by none other than Scott Greenfield, just 1 shot behind on 92 and Stuart Lodge a further shot adrift on 91.

The Ladies' trophy went to Sarah Flight and top Colt was Tom Pennington.

S/E Intercounties – Southdown 6th & 7th May 2012

The poor conditions continued as wind, rain and cold weather persisted over the weekend – on a brighter theme, there were some 300 entrants for this competition which was also an England Team Selection shoot.

Of special note was the performance of Dennis Webb who took Vets with a commanding 95, just one shot off the winning Intercounties score. Dennis goes from strength to strength and has now won the Vets category at all 3 England Selection shoots held so far this year (Southdown, Coniston & Westfield).

In the Selection/Registered competition Stuart Clarke also put in an excellent 95 but it was Cheryl Hall who took top honours with an astounding 97!

On the team front Essex were placed 6th out of 9 counties, scores listed below.

Essex County Championship & Selection 3/3 - Hepworth Hall 25/27th April 2012

The County Championship and third Selection shoot took place at Hepworth Hall in wet and windy conditions; the day before the event began a tornado had devastated neighbouring farmland, uprooting trees, laying waste buildings and scattering livestock.

John Dyson had set a demanding course which, in combination with the weather conditions, made for a severe test of the best in the county.

The Championship was won, once again, by Stuart Clarke who overcame all others to become county Champion; Tracey Riddington took the Ladies' title, George Allen the Vets. and top Junior was Nick Smith.

The final Selection shoot decided the team to represent Essex at the Intercounties to be held at Southdown the following weekend; Gerry Springham had qualified for the team but was unable to shoot the Intercounties event and so his place was taken by Peter Humphries, whose son Robert had dominated qualifying.

Essex GUN Masters Result

This year's Masters was won by Mark Winser with an incredible 189 ex 200 as youth once again triumphed over experience to win this gruelling 200 bird-in-a-day event.

Mark was closely followed by last year's winner Phil Gray who defeated George Digweed in a shoot-off for second place.

Red Course Stand 1 - Simultaneous Orange and White Pair over Water

As usual the combination of targets by John Dyson, location at Hepworth Hall and sponsorship from Essex Gun drew in huge numbers of competitors from across the country; we thank all those who worked on this 5 day spectacular in order to produce such a highlight of the sporting calendar and especially for bringing a world-class event to our own doorstep, right here in Essex.

ESP Selection Shoot 2/3 - Southdown 1st April 2012

Stand 12 - Quartering away R/L with distant Midi Crosser L/R

Southdown presented Essex hopefuls with their usual combination of big targets over a bigger-still landscape.

This time it was Scott Greenfeld who stepped up to win the day on 94, a great score which dominated the Essex selection and also won the entire event.

Many competitors who had missed the first shoot at Barrow Heath came here to try their hand at qualification for a team place - notable among these were Luke RiddingtonPhil Dyer and Steve Miller who all came home in the 80s to add to the competition for team places.

Housham Hall Farm Charity Shoot – September 11th

Faces behind the scenes:-

Ray Franklin, Keith Masek, Kath & Mike Lankshear and Gerry Springham

A dry if blustery day greeted those who came to this shoot organised by Gerry Springham in aid of Matching Village Hall car park. There were many compliments over both the character of the setting and the quality of targets.

Robert Humphreys won the Cash Class with 74 ex 80, closely followed by Nigel Gilder on 73 and kevin Theobald, 69.

In the Cartridge Class Terry Harris was triumphant, closely followed by Andy Nixon, second and Dave Camp who was third.

Nadine Gilder took Ladies and James Garrod was top Junior.

A big thank you to all those who organised the shoot and of course to all those who shot it as well – events such as these truly bring shooting into the community.

Mike Frankham offered many a tricky stand for the first Sporting Selection Shoot of 2012 which was very well attended, some 130 guns taking part.

It was a dry sunny day with no wind and Dennis Webb took Essex High Gun with a superb 90 closely followed by Gerry Springham on 88, Robert Humphries with 87 and half a dozen others in the 80s.

Essex Sporting Challenge – Keeper’s Cottage 7th August

The County Sporting Challenge was held at Keeper’s Cottage near Little Burstead over 75 birds shot on 8 stands.Stuart Clarke won the day with 68 ex 75 closely followed by Nigel Gilder on 67 and Keith Williamson on 66. Lady High Gun was Tanya Kemsley from Kent, top Vet was George Hawthorn and George Hockley took Colts. In the Trophy class Peter Humphreys won with 63, Donnie Cooper was second on 61 and Barry Canning came third with 57. I’m sure we all thank Phil Moss and Scott Greenfield for providing such an excellent venue and targets.

ESP South East of England – Southdown 14th August On a fine dry day Robert Humphreys defeated all-comers to take the South-East title with a magnificent 93.

Essex Masters – Junior Triumph 2011

The Essex Masters is generously sponsored by Essex Gun on a course designed by John Dyson in the ideal setting of Hepworth Hall. With all the boxes ticked, no surprise then that the most famous names from around the country were all there and in particular George Digweed who placed himself head and shoulders above the rest with a 192 ex 200 shot in blustery conditions on day one. Many tried but there was only one other score in the 190s by Sean Bramley until along came Phil Gray, Cambridgeshire Junior, who scored a nearperfect 195! Congratulations and we wish him every success in what promises to be a very bright future.

ESP Selection Shoot 1/3 – Barrow Heath

The first Sporting Selection shoot took place on a bright calm day at Barrow Heath where Mike Frankham presented a “firm but fair” layout of 12 stands with his usual blend of expertise and enthusiasm. Many came unstuck on a stand where a quartering away battue combined with a fast close midi crosser which defied the logic of forward allowance. Stuart Clarke won the day with an excellent 92 closely followed by Scott Greenfield, Luke Riddington and a number of other top Essex hopefuls who shot very well to get into the 80s

ESP County Championship & Selection Shoot 2/3 – Hepworth Hall

Hepworth Hall provided a thorough test of shooting skills, set up by John Dyson. Top senior was Stuart Clarke once again with a score of 90, Tracey Riddington took the Ladies with 84, Jack Greenleaf the Juniors with 85 and George Allen was top Vet with 80.

ESP – Selection Shoot 3 of 3 - Southdown

The rolling Sussex countryside provided a magnificent setting for the last Essex Selection Shoot. It was a dry but very windy day and a number of Essex hopefuls came unstuck on this compulsory qualifying event.
