2018 Southern England Olympic Skeet Championships
It was a bright and sunny day at Southend Gun Club on the 8th July 2018 where many of the best shooters in the South East turned up for the Southern England Skeet Championships. There were even some spectators that came along to enjoy some great shooting.
The first squad of the day at 10:00 posted some good scores so expectations were high for a tight competition, but the heat of the day seemed to take its toll as the day progressed. In the end the championship was contended between Nigel Barnes and Barry Dobbs, but it was Nigel, pictured below, that survived the heat the better of the two to take the title. Nigel's score also won him the Michael O'Donnell Memorial Trophy which was presented by Mick's partner Kay.
At 14 years of age and having only shot Olympic Skeet for eight months, Owen Lewis is one to look out for in the future having won the Colts title at this event. The Ladies Champion was Victoria Humphries.
High scores of the day were:
- Nigel Barnes (78) - Mens Champion
- Barry Dobbs (73) - Mens Runner-Up
- Simon Davidmann (69) - Mens 3rd place
- Victoria Humphries (77) - Ladies Champion
- Alison Nicol (68) - Ladies Runner-Up
- Owen Lewis (71) - Colts Champion
A big thank you to our referees on the day, Keith Murray, Sarah Daly, and Trevor Smith who did an excellent job.
Victoria Humphries, Ladies Champion
Nigel Barnes, Champion
Owen Lewis, Colts Champion
Where are the Olympic Skeet Competitors? 2018
The 13th May was a glorious day with sunshine and no wind, and Southend Gun Club had their ranges set up and ready to go for the Essex Olympic Skeet Championship but, alas, only two Essex competitors turned up. This used to be a well-attended event but the last couple of years have seen a significant fall-off as people seem to be truning to the simpler disciplines.
Barry Dobbs' 86/100 made him the Essex Champion for 2018, with the only other entry being Tony Mihill who shot 66.
Let's look for a much better entry next year - please keep checking the website during 2019 for the date of this event and put it in your calendar to give it a try!
2017 Olympic Skeet County Championship
The conditions were perfect, bright and sunny with no wind, for this event held on the 28th May 2017 at Southend Gun Club. Sadly it was not well attended and only the senior championship was contested. Ivan Harvey, pictured below, won the title for the second year in a row.
2016 Olympic Skeet County Championship
The weather was very sunny with little wind which proved perfect conditions for this event on Sunday, 29th June held at Southend Gun Club, and everybody enjoyed the day.
Ivan Marzocchi took the title having shot 21 on his first round, followed by 16, 21 and finally 22 for a total of 80/100. Barry Dobbs was close on his heels with 16,21,20,21, totalling 78/100, and Rob Humphreys came third with 16, 19, 16 & 21 totalling 74/100. Last year’s champion, Andy Bond, could only finish fourth with 73/100
Congratulations to Ivan this year’s Essex County Champion.

2015 Olympic Skeet Championships
Congratulations to Andy Bond (pictured below) who took this year's Olympic Skeet championship, held at the Southend Gun Club on the 17th May 2015.
The weather was very sunny with a gusty westerly wind which played havoc with high birds as they were being pushed into the ground, even so everybody enjoyed the day.
Unfortunately, due to a clash with a selection shoot on the same day, the turnout for the event was lower than normal but Andy's 82 ex 100 (18, 21, 22, 21) fought off challenges from Barry Dobbs' 80 (20, 18, 18, 24) and Dave Wilder's 68 (18, 17, 16, 17) to take the overall and veteran's titles.
Thanks to the Southend GC for laying on this event.

Only sixteen entries for this prestigious event held at Southend gun club, the weather was perfect with little wind and plenty of sunshine, the scores reflected the good conditions everybody enjoyed the day.
Tom Skinner from Surrey shot very well as he entered the competition unregistered in Olympic Skeet his nerve held shooting against regular OSK shooters some of which have represented England & GB at National and World cup level, Tom eventually finished with a creditable 92/100 equal to Andrew Bond, therefore a shoot off for Champion was needed. Andrew dropped the first target allowing Tom to take the Championship along with the Junior Championship. Sarah Gray from Kent was Ladies Champion with 83/100, and Jonathan Davidson from Gtr London Veteran Champion with 89/100.

A total of 45 shooters with six full County teams proved to be a good turn out.
Essex the previous years winners got off with a good start with 109/125 followed by Gtr London with 100/125 it was then nip and tuck all the way to the finish with Essex winning the Championship by just ten targets.
There was some very good shooting by Junior Guy Franklin from Sussex and Hoshang Noria from Gtr London who both shot a credible 95/100, both shooters ending up in a shoot-off for overall Champion, Hoshang Noria winning after an exciting finale to the event.
