Essex Universal Trench County Championship
Nuthampstead - Sunday 17th March 2024
The Essex UT Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on Sunday 17th March 2024. This event was held in conjunction with Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Sussex county championships making for a large turnout.
Although raining and breezy with variable light, it did seem slightly warmer than of late.
After a mildly shaky first round it soon became apparent that Katie Durrant was up there with the leaders and likely to be the Essex Lady champion. But once the full scores were in, she had leapt ahead and beat all the other Essex competitors.
Katie Durrant won the Essex UT Championship with a marvellous 92. Mark Burrows scored 86 to take the Veteran Trophy whilst Emma Ralph took the Ladies Trophy with 85. Eddie Lockwood scored 80 to win the Junior Trophy which is now his third Essex Trap trophy in a row.
Once again thanks are due to Nicky & Ed Barker of Nuthampstead Shooting Ground for staging this event on their superb Trap layouts.

Essex Universal Trench County Championship
Nuthampstead - Sunday 19th March 2023
The third and final 2023 fast trap county championship was the Universal Trench at Nuthampstead shooting ground. Once again the Essex county had a full cohort of competitors covering all classes from Veteran to Junior. After the first 50 targets it was all to play for with Chris Wright trailing Chris Banks by a single target but over the second half of the day the younger of the Chris’ started to pull away, eventually taking the Essex high gun on a 90. Chris Wright took the veteran trophy and second overall on an 84. Eddie Lockwood took the Junior title on a great 79 with his Mum, Lorna, taking the Ladies title home. Big thank you to Ed and Nicky at Nuthampstead for hosting us once again and giving us great facilities to shoot in.

Essex Universal Trench County Championship
Nuthampstead Shooting Ground - Sunday 20th March 2022
This was held in conjunction with the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire UT Championships.
Taking place in mid March, the cold wind once again got to the competitors as well as the targets. The saving grace being the light conditions which were mainly sunny with some white cloud. This allowed the targets stand out against the impressive Nuthampstead banked background, resulting in some excellent scores.
David Henshaw won the Championship with a score of 86, followed close behind by John Haas who took the Veterans Trophy with 85.
Those keeping an eye on the Essex Trap results will be aware that Dave & John have now taken both of these trophies at all of this year's Essex Trap Championships. But not only that, in some cases, for the second year running.
Thanks are due again to Nicky & Ed Barker of Nuthampstead Shooting Ground, for staging another perfectly run Championship on their superb Trap layouts.

Essex Universal Trench County Championship
Nuthampstead - Sunday 20th June 2021
The Essex Universal Trench Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on Sunday 20th June 2021.
This was held in conjunction with the Greater London, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire UT Championships.
Conditions were surprisingly cold & murky considering we had a heat-wave the previous week. But that didn't deter the competitors from their various counties.
The overall Essex Champion with a score of 87 was David Henshaw. The Veteran Trophy was taken by John Haas with 85.
Unfortunately there were no Essex Junior or Lady competitors present due to other Fast-Trap competitions elsewhere.
Thanks are once again due to Ed & Nicky Barker of Nuthampstead Shooting Ground for running the event on their superb Trap ranges
Pictured are Essex UT Champion David Henshaw and Essex UT Vet Champion John Haas proudly holding their trophies.
Essex UT Team Runners up in SE Regional Tournament
The South East Region Intercounties Universal Trench Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on 29th September 2019. The conditions were mixed with the odd shower and changing light. Our Essex Team consisted of Chris Wright, Dave Izzard, Dave Henshaw, Chris Banks, John Haas and Veteran Richard Banks. Despite an excellent effort including 25 straights by both Chris Wright and Dave Izzard, Essex were runners up to Greater London by only 12 targets. Greater London scored 448 to Essex's 436 in a very close run competition which should only spur Essex on in the future. The other county teams competing scored as follows: Hertfordshire 425/500, Sussex 415/500, Oxfordshire 409/500 and Surrey 377/500. At the time of writing, the same Essex team members are preparing for the National Intercounties ABT Championships for which we wish them Good Shooting!
Once again thanks go to the Barker family of Nuthampstead Shooting Ground for hosting another faultless event.

The Essex Universal Trench Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on Sunday 9th April 2017.
It was a beautiful sunny day but with enough of a breeze to flatten some of the targets a little.
The Champion was David Izzard with a score of 90, whilst The Veterans Trophy went to Chris Wright with an 86. The Ladies Trophy was taken by Emma Ralph with 76.
Once again the Barker Family put on an excellent trouble-free shoot that was enjoyed by all.

South East Region’s Intercounties Championship
Discipline: Universal Trench
Date: August 21st 2016
Venue: Nuthampstead Shooting Ground
A glorious day and an excellent entry of 11 squads for this championship.
Sadly only four full teams out of the nine put forward a team but we had a team of three from both Berkshire and Hertfordshire.
Targets were testing in places as there was a bit of wind about.
The Champion with 96/100 was Tony Coulstock (Kent)
The Lady Champion with 85/100 was Nicola Heron (Berkshire)
The Junior Champion with 93/100 was Nathan Hales (Kent)
The Colt Champion with 68/100 was Tristan Hockey (Kent)
The Veteran Champion with 90/100 was Howard Batt (Kent)
The Kent Team consisting of Tony Coulstock, Mike Wensley, Howard Batt, Nathan Hales and Tom Gridley stormed home in the team event by a massive 45 targets. Sussex were second with 417, Essex were third with 414 and Greater London were fourth with 402.
Despite the tragic loss of Martin Barker the atmosphere was great and Nicky, Ed and Will ran the event faultlessly with the help of Katy Poulsom on admin and Karen Caves in the kitchen. (Great bacon sandwich Karen !!)
At the prize giving the family felt that Martin would not appreciate a minutes silence so we had thirty seconds of vigorous clapping.
My thanks go to the Barker family for holding this event on behalf of the South East Region and special thanks to Nicky for buying me a chocolate cake!

Although chilly at times, the conditions were generally good with occasional sunshine. The targets, as usual for Nuthampstead, were excellent if a little testing.
Chris Wright and David Henshaw equalled on 88 and a shoot-off confirmed Chris Wright as Essex Champion, leaving David Henshaw with the Veterans trophy.
