Essex Sportrap Championship
The 10th August was a blustery day with occasional heavy rainshowers making the refereeing very difficult for the Essex Sportrap Championship held at Clacton Gun Club. Kevin Norfolk won the overall championship with an amazing score of 92. Dave Bignell's 85 won him the veteran title. There was a tie for the Lady's championship title with Nadine Gilder and Katie Durrant both scoring 77. Unfortunately, Nadine was unable to return for a shoot-off so Katie was pronounced the champion.
Sportrap Challenge
Thanks to Clacton gun club for hosting the Essex Sportrap challenge, at the end of the event we had a tie between Trevor Hearn and Peter Mayhew both with a score of 91. Trevor had left the ground and was contacted, but unable to return for a much anticipated shoot off, Peter (pictured below left receiving the trophy from Dave Bignell) was crowned champion for 2019 well done to him.

Essex County Sportrap Championship 2018
Andy Riva's Clacton gun club hosted the Essex county Sportrap Championship on August the 18th. This event was very well attended not only by Essex shooters but also competitors from surrounding counties. Oliver Wilde managed to retain the title once again with a very respectable 94 on what proved to be a very challenging and, as always, enjoyable course. An on-form John Price put in a solid 88 to take the Veterans title, Nadine Gilder proving yet again why she is one of the top lady shooters in Essex with a fantastic 87, Katie Durrant taking the junior title with a well earned 83 and young up and coming shot Mason Terry (pictured below) stamping his mark in the colts category. Many congratulations to all the winners and great to see the younger generation taking part in these events. Thanks Again to Andy Riva for hosting this event and all the hard work he puts into his ground.
Essex Sportrap Challenge 2018

A good steady trickle of competitors filtered through the doors throughout the day with Henry Arnold (pictured below) from Kent shooting on one of the first squads of the day putting in a fantastic 97 which could not be matched, his nearest rival was Essex based shooter Adam Cocker on a very creditable 93.Thanks to Andy Riva for putting on 4 great layouts for this event.
Essex Sportrap Championship 2017
On the 19th August glorious sunshine beamed down on Clacton gun club for the Essex county sportrap championship. A good variety of targets tested the guns with Oliver Wilde and Laurie Greenleaf tying for the title. Unfortunately Laurie was unavailable for a shoot off so the title went to Oliver.
Congratulations to the winners:
Essex sportrap champion Oliver Wilde
veteran Bill Goodchild
Lady Judy Lock
Many thanks to Andy Riva for hosting the event.
Essex Sportrap Challenge 2017
Glorious sunshine and blustery winds met competitors at Clacton gun club on 22nd of July for the Essex sportrap challenge. A steady stream of shooters came from surrounding counties throughout the day for the challenge but the score of 94 set by Oliver Wilde shooting on one of the first squads out in the morning held to take the title with fellow Essex shooter Stuart Clarke only 1 target behind, many thanks to Andy Riva of Clacton gun club for hosting the event.
2016 Essex Sportrap Championship
Chris Orrin is the new Essex Sportrap champion for 2016, the shoot was held at Clacton Gun Club on 20/08/16. The four 25 bird layouts were set by Andy Riva and with targets of the highest standard, and a high wind that got stronger and stronger as the day progressed proved to be a challenge to all who took part. So thanks to Clacton Gun Club for holding the shoot.
Champion Chris Orrin 91

Essex Sportrap Challenge 26/07/2014
With sunshine all day and the temperature rising Andy Riva at the Clacton Gun Club set four layouts of testing targets. The early starters set a high standard and with the wind swinging through 180 degrees during the course of the competition, and the target difficulty changing as a result, they were hard to follow. There was a very testing midi teal and midi overhead on range 2 that proved to bit of a card wrecker to many but all seemed happy with the day. Once again many thanks to Andy and his team for a splendid shoot.

STR County Championship – Clacton 8th September 2012
Good weather was in evidence yet again at Clacton Gun Club for the Essex Sportrap Championship. The ground suffered a few problems with trap breakdowns but competitors fully understood and all appeared happy that matters were resolved quickly with minimal delay.
There were 61 competitors and by no means were they all from Essex as the ground is now drawing interest from some distance with entries from Kent, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and even one gentleman from Lancashire! As with all Sportrap competitions, there are easy and hard targets and winning is often sorted out by those who correctly decide on the shooting order for the pairs.
The overall title and AA Class went to Lewis Steed with a 4 shot lead on 93 and continuing his run of Essex Titles in 2012.
Dave Bignall - Essex Sportrap Veteran Champion 2012
Other titles were gained by Dave Bignall who took Veterans' and fourth place overall with an excellent 88 after a long day’s work and demonstrating that a single target can prove the fine line between success and failure; Judy Lock became Ladies Champion, S. Wells took the Junior title and D Fenner the Colt title.
Judy Lock - Essex Sportrap Ladies' Champion 2012
Elsewhere Laurie Greenleaf, recent B class winner at the British Open, put in a superb effort scoring 89 to take Joint Runner-up alongside Oliver Wilde, who is always there or thereabouts at championship level. Chris Rose won A class with an incredible 88 taking advantage of a gap in his surgery; Mike Worsfold won B class with 87 (though Andy Riva suggests he will have to double-check this outcome!!!); Dave Humphries won C class proving that his endurance and long membership at the club has it's rewards; Malcolm Tolley scored a very good 87 as he continues his return from illness, finishing Runner-up in the Vets title along with Terry Butcher and Mike Worsfold.

Essex Sportrap Challenge - Clacton GC 28th July 2012
Lewis Steed
The Essex Sportrap Challenge took place at Clacton Gun Club on a typical British summer’s day - but without the rain!
P Mastroeni from Cambridgeshire posted an early 96 to set the pace for the day. A Kartocius from Greater London also finished on 96 and many of the club regulars stepped up to give it their best and, on any other day, might have matched this score.
Then, Lewis Steed from Essex took his turn. Lewis applied himself, using the fast reactions and speed of youth together with tremendous levels of control and sporting ability. He dropped two on the first layout, one on the second, and straighted the third. Then came the fourth – a no bird in a simultaneous pair meant that hitting the first counted for nothing and with the familiar call of "no target, nothing established, pair again" the pressure continued. Lewis did not falter and scored another 25 posting a score of 97 and taking honours on the day.
Our thanks go to Andy Riva and Clacton GC for setting some challenging targets and supporting yet another Essex CPSA shoot.
Essex Sportrap Championship - Clacton 20th August 2011
It’s that man again …. 4 testing layouts confronted the competitors and the weather was fine with no wind to affect the targets. On the very first squad British Champion Scott Greenfield shot a superb 93 to take the Senior title. There were also 2 other 93s from outside Essex shot by Eric Chapman and Brian Dunbavin. Lewis Steed and Oliver Wilde were the only other Essex men to come close on 92.
The in-form George Allen won Vets with a score of 87, Lewis Steed took Juniors with a magnificent 92, Ladies went to Nadine Gilder and D Fenner won the Colts on 69. Entries were up on last year at 78.

Scott Greenfield - British Champion Sportrap 31st July 2011
Once more Scott Greenfield has triumphed at national level taking the BO STR at Doveridge in July. On Saturday, Martin Myers and Ed Solomons had both scored magnificent 94s and looked scheduled for a Sunday shoot-off to decide the title when along came Scott Greenfield with a superlative 95 to snatch the title.
Also of note Scott and son Zak captured the Sportrap Parent and Child title to complete an exceptional day. Well done Scott who now adds another significant title to his previous victory in the British Open Sporting.

Essex Sportrap Challenge – 23rd July 2011
This event was held at Clacton Gun Club where, after a lot of rain overnight, thankfully it kept dry all day; there were moderate winds and a reasonable setup which reflected in the scores.
Oliver Wilde led for most of the day with a score of 94, holding Messrs. Papworth and Walker at bay on their 93s. However, later that day, Brian Dunbavin crossed the Cambridgeshire border to snatch the trophy with a splendid 96.
