Coaching Appeal  - Helena Romanes School, young shots club

Helena Romanes is an Academy school based in Great Dunmow which offers secondary education to 11-18 year olds.

Neal Wilcox  has founded a shooting club within the school and conducts regular coaching sessions with his pupils.

As a result of the success of the shooting club and its growing numbers they are now looking for help with coaching sessions; typically this would involve spending one morning a month sharing your knowledge with youngsters at somewhere like the Fennes.

Naturally the position would suit a qualified coach but they will also consider experienced shots with a patient attitude and the ability to inject enthusiasm for shooting sports. Of course the club is run entirely on a voluntary basis and so there is no pay as such other than the recompense of knowing that you will have made a lasting contribution to the sporting lives of the young in Essex.

Please apply in the first instance to essexcpsa@gmail.com - if you would like any further information don't hesitate to ask.

Young Shots at the Fennes - 8th August 2012

The Essex CPSA in collaboration with the Fennes SG have together hosted another Young Shots day. This was the second year running where the Essex CPSA has reinvested its income into the local youth community, offering school-age novices the opportunity to try their hand at sporting targets.

Once again the event was oversubscribed and hailed as a great success by those who took part. Here is a sample of the comments written in appreciation of the day:

“We would like to thank the CPSA for sponsoring the shooting day at Fennes … had a great time … instructors were really good and we learnt a lot.”

“… just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for a brilliant lesson you gave my son today … he has talked non stop about what he has learnt and can't wait to put it into practice.”

“Thank you for sponsoring such a wonderful event for my nine year old son to attend … recently taken up this sport … a super day … thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for his next clay shooting trip.”

The Essex CPSA believes that it is of paramount importance for us to spend time and money on the promotion of shooting sports in the local community. We thank all those who took part and especially to the instructors and the Fennes itself for its continuing support.

Essex Side-by-Side Championship - Sunday 9th September

Time to dig that old gun out of its cabinet - the 2012 Essex Side-by-Side shoot is upon us and will be hosted once again  by Hertfordshire Sporting Clays (formerly Spellbrook) which is located between Harlow and Bishop's Stortford right on the Herts-Essex border at CM22 7SH.

Steve Miller - 2011 Side-by-Side Champion

Last year's winner was Steve Miller who put in a very good round to defeat all-comers and became the first to put his name on the trophy.

It will be a fun day out attended by some 90 participants last year, most of whom were there to blow the cobwebs and rust out of their gun's barrels. The ground has a clubhouse with full catering facilities and shooting will start at 10:00, fibre wads please which can be bought on site.

Stuart Clarke - on top of the World, Sweetslade 4/5th August 2012

Congratulations to Stuart Clarke who has won the World Sporting Championship held at Sweetslade in Gloucestershire. Stuart scored a magnificent 181 ex 200 to qualify for the Super-6 man Final which he then went on to win. Well done Stuart, now a 2 time World Sporting Champion!

Essex was particularly well represented as our very own Scott Greenfield was another of the elite 6 in the Super Final; also of note was the performance of the irrepressible Dennis Webb who was part of the winning English Vet Team.

This will also be the 6th year of the Paul Juniper memorial trophy; as usual there will be a pool shoot with £1 of the fee being donated to the British Heart Foundation and a raffle will be held for the same good cause – last year £445 was donated to the British Heart Foundation along with additional donations of over £300 for local good causes in Terling.

There will be trophy classes for Overall, Side- by-Side, Ladies, and Juniors; hot and cold refreshments will be available and entries will be from 10am until 3pm.

Dennis Webb - Arnold's Farm Victor

Dennis was a last-minute entry to the Essex Club & Team shoot but very glad to have taken part after all as he ran away with the event shooting an excellent 93.

For a full report please click here.

Tracey Riddington - a "Classic" Victory

EJ Churchill again hosted this year's Clay Shooting Classic which as always presented a demanding course but this year competitors were also faced with very demanding conditions as rain and gusting winds dominated the three days of the main event.

Tracey did particularly well on the red course, which was shot over open farmland, leaving her nearest rival 8 shots behind - she secured the Ladies' title winning £300 and 1000 cartridges from Eley.

For a full table of results please click here.

Matthew Coward-Holley - The Glory Continues

Matt's latest triumph was a victory at the Krieghoff Classic, the biggest DTL event in the UK which was held at Mid-Wales SG ending on June 2nd.

Matt took A Class and a prize of £500 with a score of 199/592. Congratulations Matt for doing so well in a major competition. For full results please click here.

After recent success at Bywell, Matt has just been selected to shoot for England in the Home International, the European and the World Championships.

Scott Greenfield - English Open Runner-Up

Scott Greenfield narrowly missed winning the English Open held at Southdown in May. Having scored 95 he found himself holding the lead equal with both Mark Winser and Brett Hand.

A shoot-off ensued over 20 birds where Mark Winser took the title with 19, leaving both Scott and Brett just behind on 17; after a sudden-death further shoot-off Scott secured the Runner-Up title.

Scott was very nearly the first Senior to secure both the British and English Open titles and is shooting at such a high level that we will surely see many more achievements from him in the near future.

We wish Scott every success in the majors this season. For a full listing of the English Open results please click here.

Peter Stanton-Hope has continued his run of good results by winning the Winter Series held at Bisley over the course of nearly five months to the end of March 2012.

With four out of the five results counting, Peter returned three straight 100’s and a 98 to take the trophy with 398 ex 400.

He was 7 shots ahead of Tim Connolly on 391 and Martin Brister was third-placed on 389.

Down-the-Line Triumph at Mayland GC.

We have noticed that the English Sporting individual Championship for the South of England has now been moved to Southdown on the 22nd of April.

ESK S/E Intercounties

We have noticed that the English Skeet Intercounties event has now been moved to September the 9th, still at NCSC, and presumably because of the clash with the England Selection shoot at Doveridge.

You might find of interest an announcement from Johnny Johnson here.

Essex CPSA Committee - needs YOU!

Have you considered joining the Essex committee? We are currently looking for a Committee Secretary to organise our affairs and keep minutes of meetings.

Draft minutes of the Essex 2012 AGM are now published here.

Barrow Heath - ESP Selection Shoot

Please note that the date for this event is now Sunday 11th March. Please see Fixture list.

AGM - Fennes 15th February 2012

We're pleased to now be able to confirm that the AGM will be held at the Fennes on Wednesday 15th February at 20:00.

Whether you compete for county trophies, represent an Essex team or just plain shoot in Essex you'll be most welcome - don't forget there will be complimentary drinks and a buffet.

We're pleased to announce that Johnny Johnson, the CPSA South-east Director will be joining us to offer a perspective from HQ and to field questions from the audience; we are also expecting John Hopes who is Senior Firearms Officer with Essex Police and who will also respond to questions.

Have you considered joining the Essex committee? The pay's not great  but you will only be asked to attend for 3 or 4 evenings during the course of the year. You don't need to be a county champ just enthusiastic about what goes on in your own county. It maybe that you have other complimentary interests for example in IT or photography and these too would be most welcome. Please contact a committee member either now or at the AGM.

Sporting Selection Shoots

Please note that, by popular demand, this year's selection shoots will include Southdown but it will not be compulsory to shoot there; selection will be based on the best 2 scores from any of the 3 selection events at Barrow Heath, Southdown and Hepworth Hall. Please see ESP fixtures.

The Hepworth Hall selection shoot will also include the County Championship.

If you have any queries on selection, teams or the county championship please contact a member of the committee.

Peter Cardnell

It is with regret that we must inform you that Peter died shortly before Christmas.

I'm sure any of you who had the pleasure of meeting him would have been touched by his intelligence, friendliness and enthusiasm and will join us in commiserating over his sad loss.

Gary Shortenrule

Phil Moss - Pastures New

So farewell then … in a surprise move Phil Moss is to take charge of both the ground and target-setting at the Manchester Clay Shooting Club (www.manchesterclayshooting.com).

David Lloyd has been making a significant investment in the shooting facilities at Manchester and Phil is joining him to develop ESP, STR and FITASC.

I’m sure many Essex guns will be making the trip north in 2012 to support this promising venture.

AGM

Don’t miss the shooting highlight of the year, the must-attend most important sporting event in the social calendar which is set to eclipse the Sports Personality of the year, the Olympic opening ceremony and the Oscars – yes it’s the Essex CPSA AGM where we will all meet up to discuss the shooting experience in Essex.
