Essex Top Nationals at Allround Championships
On Sunday 25th October the Essex team of shooters met at Northampton gun club to take part in the All-round National championship, one shooter had chosen not to turn out but shoot at another shooting ground so it is with great thanks to Zac Palmer for stepping in at the very last second to make a full team.
The conditions were warm and sunny for the time of year but the light conditions made the blaze targets on the DTL, Ball trap and skeet very hard to see clearly and this was reflected in the scores that were coming in to the club house.
When the shooting was over it was a long wait before the final scores were calculated and the Essex team were Victorious winning by a healthy ten target margin in the seniors event and coming third in the veterans.
It is time for a special mention to Lewis Steed who shot like a true champion hitting a magnificent 94 on his way to taking the high-gun prize, and title of National inter-counties champion, and winning by four targets over his nearest rival.
In the Essex team were:
Scott Greenfield
Robert Humphreys
Peter Humphreys
Paul Brewster
Patrick (MAC) McLauchlan
Laurence Greenleaf
Lewis Steed
Zac Palmer
Dave Bignell
Well Done and thanks to all.
All scores to be found on CPSA website.
Essex Triumph at 2015 National Inter-Counties Olympic Trap
The South East Region Inter-Counties Olympic Trap Championship was held at the NCSC Bisley on Sunday 18th October 2015. There was a good turnout with eight counties taking part.
Conditions were mixed with occasional glimpses of sunshine, but the last squads suffered very poor light which showed in some of the scores.
The Essex team triumphed with a score of 427/500, thirteen targets ahead of their nearest rival Berkshire with 414/500.
The photo shows the winning Essex Team of David Henshaw, John Haas, Chris Wright, Phil Meyler, Emma Ralph, Marco Pullen. (David Izzard having left the ground.)
Long Wait for Skeet Result
The Essex senior skeet team had a long wait on Sunday, 18th October at Northampton Shooting Ground. Their overall team score of 479 ex 500 led the field for much of the day at the National Inter-Counties Championship but, sadly, late in the afternoon an excellent 491 from Yorkshire and 485 from Northmaptonshire pushed them down to a still very respectable third place overall.
The weather was not very helpful, with a dull grey sky merging into the high banks at Northampton and making it hard to pick the clays up. Despite this, the team all produced respectable scores with team captain Darren Sweeney scoring 98 closely followed by Malcolm Clarke on 96 and the rest of the squad close behind. Huge thanks to Ray Rogers who stepped into the team at the last minute following a late cancellation from another squad member.
Diane Boutcher recovered from a relatively poor 21 in her first round to finish on 92 ex 100 to take the third place overall in the ladies section.

The Essex Champion was Ian Schweir on a total of 89 just one ahead of Robert Humphreys.
Ladies champion was Bev Griggs and Veteran Champion Jeff Bone. Once again we sadly had no colt or junior entries.

The Essex Allround challenge took place at Clacton gun club on the 22nd August 2015, the weather was giving the shooters a treat as the air was still and hot and the scores reflected the conditions with some high scores. Thanks to all at Clacton Gun Club for such a good shoot.
Winner and champion was P Mayhew with 96 joint runner up were L Greenleaf and A Stephenson both on 94.
Essex Junior Takes S.E. DTL Title
Dave Argent, an Essex Junior shot (pictured below), took the Junior Championship Title at the South Eastern Inter-Counties DTL Tournament on the 2nd August. In very sunny and warm conditions his 97 for 287 was enough to see off his junior opponents from the other counties.
In Memoriam
Our sympathies go to the family and friends of Mick Clements who recently lost his battle with illness. He was a long-time member of the Lawns Shooting Club but many others in Essex will know him as he was regularly to be found at shooting events around the county.

First 2015 Sporting Selection Shoot Results
Many thanks to Phil Moss and his team at Barrow Heath Shooting ground for hosting the first of the Essex Sporting selection shoots. Forty two Essex shooters took part in what was a high scoring event that was held along with the Russ Wall memorial shoot, the weather was warm and sunny with only a slight wind and there was a very good selection of high quality targets set over twelve stands. It seems a pity that we did not have a single junior or colt enter lets hope they turn up for the next selection shoot at Southdown.
See sporting-selection-table for the current standings.

Report.
The weather was super for October - warm and sunny with hardly any wind, and the 100 targets over 12 stands were, as we would expect from John Dyson, well worth the entry fee so a special thanks to him and his team at Hepworth Hall for hosting the event.
At the end of the shoot there was a three way tie with Scott Greenfield, Stuart Clarke and Lewis Steed all with a score of 92. As Scott was the only one to stay he was awarded the championship. Lady champion was June Speakman 84, Veteran Champion Jeoff Bone 88 and Colt Champion was 12 year old Ryan Dodd with a very good 61. The awards were handed out by John Dyson and Luke Riddington to end what was a most enjoyable day.
This was also the first selection shoot for the 2016 season - see sporting-selection-table for the latest positions.

South-East Inter-Counties Skeet Tournament 2015
This year's South East Region Skeet Championship was held at NCSC Bisley where 9 teams took part in somewhat variable weather conditions. Essex started strongly with 3 25 straights in the first round from team captain Darren Sweeney, Jack Greenleaf, and Robert Humphreys. After some continued consistent scoring from all team members, the team ended up with 481 ex 500 which was jointly leading the field with Kent for much of the afternoon until the last team of the day, Oxfordshire, came in with a total of 485 to take the title by 4 targets leaving Essex as joint runners-up. Essex high gun in the senior's team was Darren Sweeney with 98 followed closely by Shaun Pipe on 97.
Essex achieved even better success with Olly Pipe winning the juniors with a very decent 93. Judy Lock posted a respectable 88 and was enough for 4th in the Ladies division and Richard Boutcher also ended up with a 4th place finish in the veterns' category with a decent 93.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part because if it wasn't for yourselves taking part these events wouldn't be able to happen. Darren Sweeney.

2015 Essex Skeet Championship
On Saturday, 27th June 2015, the hottest day of the year so far, the start of the promised heatwave greeted the 44 shooters who made the trip to Clacton Gun Club for the 2015 Essex Skeet Championship.
A 'hot' pace was set by Graham Gooday in the first squad out when he returned a score of 99, dropping his only missed bird in his first round and finishing with 75 straight. In fact, this early score was never beaten throughout the rest of the day leaving him as Champion and the Vet's winner, although O Wilde and Chris Theobald both made good attempts finishing joint second on 97.
Amongst a number of competitors finishing on 96, only one was eligible for the Steve Todd Trophy for Class B and C shooters - that was Rob Nash on his first competitive skeet outing. He is pictured below receiving his trophy from Helen Todd. Judy Lock took the Ladies trophy. Sadly there were no junior or colts entries this year.

Skeet Selection Shoot
The skeet selection shoot that had already been planned prior to changes to the process, took place on Saturday, 21st March at the Clacton Shooting Ground. As a result of this change of status, it was disappointingly attended by Essex shooters, but those that did take part had an enjoyable day despite some challenging weather conditions. The low early scores were a sure sign that the high and blustery winds would impact on most people’s returns. Although still difficult later on, P Brewster managed two straights in the middle of his round of 97 to finish as the highest Essex gun on the day, followed by Robert Humphreys in the seniors section. Ken Peirse was the highest placed vet and Judy Lock returned the best lady’s score. Thanks to Andy Riva and his team for looking after this event.

2015 Essex Skeet Team Selection
The selection process for the skeet teams for the 2015 season will be different to recent years. It will now be based on the on-going returns of anyone who has registered an interest in shooting for the team with committee member Darren Sweeney. He can be contacted by e-mail at darrensweeney956@yahoo.co.uk. Please make sure you contact him if you would like to be considered for the team.
There will also be a single selection shoot at Clacton on the 21st March 2015 which is optional but can be used to count as one of your returns for consideration.
It is a stated objective of the committee that, wherever possible, the skeet tournament events should be shot as a team with everyone shooting together in their squads, and they ask for your co-operation in meeting this objective when putting yourself forward for selection.
