Welcome to the Staffordshire English Sporting (ESP) Page

Description

English Sporting (ESP ) is the most popular discipline in England. In ESP shooters move across a course of stands set across a wide variety of terrain, often set far apart. The terrain can vary from woodland to farmland to rolling hills or cliff faces – whatever is available on the land is fair game.

Targets at each stand can be anything that is safe. The types of targets thrown are often named according to the type of game they simulate such as ‘rising teal’ or ‘high driven (pheasant)’. There is even a target that is thrown so that it rolls and bounces on the ground, called a ‘rabbit’.

Selection Criteria

In order to qualify to represent Staffordshire at this year’s Inter-County championship, you must:

💥 Be available to shoot for the county at the Inter County championship at Doveridge on Sunday 22nd September.

💥 WM Area Inter County ESP & Sportrap at Westfield 💥

– 11th Sept 2022

L to R: Martin Butcher, James Ward, Sam Ward, Phil Bailey and Jack Whitehouse.

Paul Rowbottom had to leave but will receive his medal in due course.

Congratulations and thank you to all those Staffordshire shooters who made the trip to Westfield today for the last Inter County championship of the season.  The Senior team of Phil Bailey, Martin Butcher, Paul Rowbottom, James Ward, Sam Ward and Jack Whitehouse put in an excellent 447 to take Silver.  Well done team Staffs!  Congratulations to Warwickshire who once more took Gold with Bronze for Hereford & Worcester.

Our Veterans team of Mark Byng, Peter Cantrill and Tony Thompson, along with our Junior Team of Lewis Beardmore and Neil Foxley all put in good performances but we narrowly lost out in the medals in those categories.  Lara Dale was our sole Ladies representative and she shot a fine 82 to finish third overall in Ladies.

New cap, Neil Foxley with the Staffordshire Team badge

Some other notable individual performances came in both the English Sporting and Sportrap.  In the ESP, Martin Butcher’s 95 saw him finish top of AA class, third overall in a field of 270 and High Gun from the WM Region.  In the Sportrap, Jack Whitehouse also hit 95 to finish top of the pile.  Great shooting from both.  Martin narrowly lost out in the 25 target shoot off of the highest scoring team member from each county.  Les Beardmore took a win in C class with an excellent 80 and Ryan Murrell finished joint 4th in B class, as did Jack Tromans in A class.

💥 Staffordshire ESP Team Selection 2022 💥

Firstly, I would just like to thank everyone who has taken the time and effort to take part in the 6 selection shoots I have ran this year and for the support and nice comments I have received from everyone throughout👏🏻

Secondly, to thank everyone who has paid the all-important levy’s which go towards so many different things within the county and it is greatly appreciated.

And finally, I am happy to announce the Staffs 2022 ESP Team! Congratulations to you all… Shooting for your county is a great honour and something to be very proud of.

Unfortunately, we are missing 1 Junior and 2 Ladies in these teams. As stated below we did not have enough entries at 3/6 selection shoots (at both grounds) to field a complete team. Hopefully, next year we will see a few more!

The WM Area Inter Counties is to be held at Westfields on Sunday 11th September, hosted by The Clay Shooting Company. This shoot is an open shoot also, so if anybody looking at trying out for the team wants to go to Westfields and see how it runs etc…please do.

If anyone had any questions regarding the selection, please do not hesitate to contact me: laradale@icloud.com

I hope everyone will join me in congratulating our team and wishing them the best of luck!

💥 WM Area Inter Counties Championship - 10 Oct 2021 💥

Terrific day yesterday for the Inter Counties Championship at Westfield Shooting Ground.

Consensus was that there were some tough but fair ESP targets on what was a cracking course to shoot. Big thank you to Steve Lovatt of The Clay Shooting Company, and all of his team for putting on an excellent competition on what would have been a very long day for them. And of course, a special THANK YOU to all of the referees 👏

Kate Poyser, Valerie-Anne Barrow & Carole Holmdes                 Steve Kilner, Martun Butcher & Kate Poyser

It was a pleasure to walk round the ESP course and shoot with the Staffordshire CPSA Ladies team; Kate Poyser, Carole Holmes and Valerie-Anne Barrow and an honour to present them with their County badges. They really did earn them out there. Thank you, Kate, Carole and Valerie - you were brilliant. Great also to have Martin Butcher with us. Must have done him good! He put in a fantastic score of 90.

It was also terrific to field a Staffordshire Juniors Team: well done to Lucy Christie, Ben Mason and Lewis Sones for taking on a tough course and putting in an excellent combined score - we are massively proud of your efforts 👏

Big thank you to Staffs Team Manager Steve Ward for pulling this together. Steve did a cracking job as did the team as Josh Bennion, Gav Heath, Tim A Simmons, James Ward, Sam Ward and Jack Whitehouse put in a magnificent score of 451 meaning Staffs took the Senior Silver 🥈

Josh Bennion presented with the Staffs High Gun Trophy

by ESP Manager, Steve Ward

Josh Bennion took the Staffs IC High Gun trophy with an outstanding 94, just 4 off overall High Gun which was shared between Fred Whitehurst and Michael Cyffin-Jones.

Congratulations also to David Whieldon who was top of B class with 87 - great shooting David!

Well shot, Paul! 👏🏆

Many congratulations to our new ESP County Ladies Champion, Valerie-Anne Barrow 👏

💥 CPSA English Open Sporting – 23 May 2021 💥

Always enjoy celebrating success for our Staffordshire shooters.

Here is Chris Daniels picking up the trophy for his AA Class win at the CPSA English Open English Sporting 2021 at Barbury Shooting School.

You can read a full write up of the competition and a breakdown of all the winners on the CPSA website here.

Well done to Richard Faulds who takes the trophy once more in the ESP English Open, winning the 6 man shoot-off in some pretty testing conditions, which is fitting as that's been the story most of the week! Congratulations, Richard and to everyone who made the Final, including Staffordshire's Chris Daniels, of course.

There have been some truly terrific performances from our Staffs shots, across all classes over the last few days. This really is a testing competition, as it should be.

Chris Daniels led the way for the County with his final-qualifying 109. Sam Upton and Brett Hand both broke the 100 mark 👏 That's some serious scoring.

Josh BennionKevin SherrattSam WardTim SimmonsJames HandStephen WilliamsTimothy HattonSteve WardJack Whitehouse, and Martin Butcher all hit scores in the 90s. Again, that is some going given the standard of the targets and the challenge of the conditions.

Massively proud of you......as we are of all our Staffordshire shooters who took part.

Two Staffordshire sporting shooters were on form at the CPSA English Open Sporting Championship,

Chris Daniels came in third place overall after taking part in an exciting 6 man Super Final.

Also, Sam Ward followed on from his Essex Masters triumph in April to take second place in C class with a score of 101 ex 120.

Huge congratulations to both!

********************************************************* ·

Special congratulations go to young Staffordshire shooter Sam Ward who won C class by 3 clear targets at the Essex Masters to bag himself a Fabarm worth £1200.

A huge achievement when you consider he has been shooting less than 6 months and for less than 2 months with his new gun.
